Lot Number: 55

Description: October 12, 1908 Christy Mathewson "Token of Esteem" Sterling Silver presentational loving cup-Lone award trophy within the Mathewson Collection. Three handled trophy is engraved on the front, "Presented To Christy Mathewson, By Joseph M. Gaites, As A Token Of Esteem, Oct. 12, 1908." Gaites was a noted Broadway Producer and at the time was involved with the musical "The Three Twins." As recounted in a period newspaper article, Mathewson and several of his New York Giants teammates attended a showing at the Herald Square Theater in Manhattan. At the conclusion of the second act a noted stage actor of the time, Clinton Crawford, presented Mathewson with the trophy and lead a rendition of "For He's A Jolly Good Fellow." In offering his thanks for the honor Matty praised the fans of New York and predicted another title for the Giants (a feat they would not accomplish until they claimed the N.L. Pennant in 1911). The 9.5" tall trophy is marked "Sterling" on the underside and weighs (30.5oz). Touch of light tarnish and hint of handling/storage wear. Includes Mathewson Collection certificate of provenance: EX
