Lot Number: 53

Description: Charming 1912 Christy Mathewson fan letter asking about his famed "fade-away" pitch. Two page letter dated May 27, 1912 and addressed to "Christopher Mathewson, Pitcher of N.Y. Nationals baseball team." Content reads in part, "Enclose (sic) will find fifty cents (.50) for which would you please tell and describe to me how to throw your fade-award and in and out curves...I have heard of your famous fade-away and would like to know how to throw it...Yours Truly, Ernest Derrick." Typical fold lines and some general handling wear. This piece surely meant a great deal to Mathewson for him to have saved it within his papers. Includes Mathewson Collection certificate of provenance: VG-EX
