Description: Momentous 1923 New York Yankees World Series Champions presentational trophy. Large bowl has ornate engraving on the front with "New York Baseball Club-1923 Champions Of The World" text surrounding a graphic done to resemble a globe (showing North America) which has baseball stitching on either side. This is flanked by a pair of American flags and the names of team owner Jacob Ruppert and Manager Miller Huggins. Also noted is the outcome of the World Series, "Yankees 4 Games Giants 2." On either side are the names of all (20) Yankees players whom formed to core of the team including their young superstar Babe Ruth. Additional engraving on the back reads "Spalding, Worlds Championship Bowl, Baseball Equipment Of The 1923 Champions." On the underside is the makers hallmark and rampant lion markings indicative of sterling silver PLATED composition (total weight is 61.3 ounces). The 1923 season witnessed the maturation of the New York Yankees process to develop into a championship caliber team and organization. While New York had long been a pillar to the game of baseball the team had never won a world championship and had previously played the bridesmaid to their cross town brethren the New York Giants. Everything changed with the monumental acquisition of Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox in 1920. Ruth had developed into the game's biggest star and his performance during the 1920-22 period afforded the Yankees revenues to provide for the construction of Yankee Stadium allowing the team to finally end the shared relationship with the Giants in the Polo Grounds. The 1923 inaugural season at Yankee Stadium was fittingly crowned with the first World Series Championship in franchise history as the Yankees appropriately defeated the Giants. The offered trophy has resided within a private collection for nearly 25 years and was recalled to have been originally acquired from a acquaintance of New York Yankees manager Miller Huggins along his 1927 World Series ring. While we were not able to specifically discern the exact presentation date or recipient of this historic trophy it is highly likely that it may well have been given to Huggins at the inaugural New York Chapter Dinner of the BBWAA. The banquet was held on January 27, 1924 at the Hotel Commodore in New York City and hosted an impressive roster of guests including Babe Ruth and Jacob Ruppert. There was also a celebratory dinner held in Cincinnati (Huggins' hometown) on November 11, 1923 which certainly could have been a possible date of receipt along with opening day of the 1924 baseball season in New York. No matter the date of receipt, the offered trophy represents one of the most significant professional baseball championship presentational championship trophies to have ever been offered. The trophy joins an elite group of documented examples having been traditionally presented to either the team manager or owner many of which have been lost to history over the years or reside in private institutions. Remarkable presentational piece with immeasurable significance as a commemorative of the New York Yankees inaugural World Championship: EX/MT-NM
