Lot Number: 191

Description: Rare and possibly unique 1923 Babe Ruth broadside. Striking original 28"x42" advertising piece with a prominent image of Ruth to one side was issued to promote baseball games played by the National Vaudeville Artists' Sick and Benefit Fund baseball team. An endorsement from Ruth reads in part, "To my pals of the N.V.A. baseball club, You boys have the fastest semi-pro baseball club I have ever seen and I trust your 1923 tour will be a howling success...I have enjoyed your work on the stage and diamond alike. I hope your tour will bring in a lot of money to the National Vaudeville Artists' Sick and Benefit Fund and in that I am joined by all the members of the Yankee team..." Marked at the bottom "National Printing & Engraving Co. L.I. City, New York". With note to the fragility of pieces of this type the poster retains fine eye appeal despite creases and wear. It has been laid on a linen backing with areas of professional restoration and a few spots of inpainting. One of the premier Ruth related advertising pieces which we have offered with particular regard to impressive size, unique nature, and importance of the 1923 season (with the opening of Yankee Stadium and the Yankees first World Series Championship): GD/VG
