Description: Significant 1971 Joe Frazier "Edward J. Neil Memorial" award - presented annually to the Fighter of The Year (EX) Highly important presentational piece as bestowed upon Joe Frazier "For Outstanding Service to Boxing in 1971." The honor has been voted on annually by the Boxing Writers Association since it's inception in 1938 and was named for Neil who was killed that year while reporting on the Spanish Civil War. It has since been retitled the Sugar Ray Robinson Award. In 1971 Frazier, then reigning undisputed Heavyweight Champion, had met Muhammad Ali in Madison Square Garden for the "Fight of The Century." Winning by unanimous decision he extended his professional record to (27) wins with no losses and touched off one of the great boxing rivalries of the modern era. Black wooden plaque (10.5"x15.5") has substantive affixed cast bronze plate at front which has likeness of Neil at top. Text/titling below reads in full, "The Edward J. Neil Memorial For Outstanding Service to Boxing in 1971, Presented by Boxing Writers' Association of New York To Joe Frazier." Frazier has signed the bronze portion in black marker rating 7/8 out of 10 and handwritten what appears to be "Rubin 3" which may be a reference to his father. Black wooden portion has some scattered wear/chipping with a few small areas of surface/material loss. Includes modern printed copy of period press photo showing Frazier recieving the award and letter of provenance from the Frazier family: EX ($4,000-$6,000)
