Lot 239

Description: Fine 1934 U.S. All-Star team Tour of Japan autographed Shikiski: Shikishi Board and cover: Range VG/EX-EX, Signatures: Range EX-NM Highly desirable piece as signed by (14) members of the United States All-Star team who had toured Japan and the Orient in 1934. The heavy stock cardboard "shikishi" served as a perfect medium for the players to have signed in blue and black fountain pen to include McNair, Miller, Ebling (team dr.), Schroeder (team secr.), Quinn, Mack, Warstler, O'Doul, Gehrig, Foxx, Gehringer. Cascarella, Gomez, and Babe Ruth. Signatures range fromt 6-9 out of 10 with the majority rating 8 or better. Gehrig rates a very strong 9 out of 10 with Ruth having some slight age fading rating 7 out of 10. Some typical age toning and surface staining Shikishi were one of the more popular mediums in Japan to obtain autographs of notable athletes and celebrities with the offered example retaining its original fiber board covers having Japanese characters. Interestingly the characters at the bottom translate to -Tokyo Baseball Club+ indicating it may well have been signed during a stop on the Tour against the Tokyo club. Very fine and rare autograph display piece with relation to the legendary 1934 Tour. Includes full LOA from JSA: Shikishi Board and cover: Range VG/EX-EX, Signatures: Range EX-NM ($4,000-$6,000)
