Lot Number: 96

Description: Christy Mathewson's personal World War I footlocker with "Capt. Christy Mathewson" autograph. Original 31"x17"x13" travel trunk (footlocker) used by Christy Mathewson during his time in France as a member of the Chemical Warfare Service. The name "Capt. C. Mathewson" is hand painted on either end along with the lid which has "C.W.S." (Chemical Warfare Service) and "US Army" added below. On one end is an "American Express Company" label (presumably a shipping Company) which has a faint "Capt Christy Mathewson" autograph along the bottom (approx. 3-3/4 out of 10). Expected use and wear throughout, evidence of the long journey which the trunk from the United States to France and back. There are some additional flaws which likely resulted from it being forced open when the key could not be located. These include evidence of prying to the central lock area and likely some missing portions of the interior workings. In addition, the two hasps on front have small portions missing and one hinge on the back is loose at the top. The interior storage tray remains in place. "Neverbreak" manufacturer name appears in two places. An immensely desirable piece of military equipment which is directly attributed to a notable figure. Includes full LOA from PSA/DNA and Mathewson Collection certificate of provenance: GD-EX
