Lot Number: 89

Description: Christy Mathewson's U.S. Army overseas cap from World War I with related Type "I" photograph. Cloth hat done in what was then called "overseas" style but is now referred to as the Garrison Cap. A two-bar pin is affixed near the front of the left side. A safety pin was placed inside to help maintain the shape and crease and there is mild evident wear including some discoloration to the interior band. Mathewson can be seen in an included approx. 6.75"x9" photograph (authenticated as Type "I" by PSA and encapsulated) wearing the hat as he stands beside his wife. It is unclear if is was taken prior to his departure for France or upon his return. A highly desirable and very personal piece as relates to this defining period in Mathewson's life. His selfless and noble act of enlistment in the Armed Forces would ultimately lead to severe lung damage and cut short any hopes of a return to his Hall of Fame career in baseball. Includes Mathewson Collection certificate of provenance: EX
