Description: Enormous Christy Mathewson photograph by N.W. Penfield c.1900s-10s - his iconic T206 image. Important oversized vintage photograph is an iconic pose and one of the most recognizable ever taken of Christy Mathewson. It served as the basis for both the dark and light cap versions of Matty's 1909-11 T206 cards. The image measures 9.5"x27.5" and is it mounted on period 14"x33.25" board, an enormous size for the period and it must have been considerably expensive to produce. It has been color tinted by hand and there is a fountain pen "copyright NW Penfield" notation at lower right. Photograph itself remains in exceptional condition and there is some mild wear to mount including a crack to the lower left corner. Framed to 15.5"x35" for display with modern matting that covers the wear to matting (and corner crack). Certainly produced in the period (although the exact year of issue is unclear) and it is likely that it was a presentational piece to Mathewson himself by the photographer.
