Description: Important Mickey Mantle 1961 season "Player Of The Year" Award. Wooden oval shaped plaque has a metal plate affixed to the front done to resemble the logo of the Baseball Writers Association of America. Impressed text reads, "The Sid Mercer Memorial Award Presented By The New York Chapter, Baseball Writers" Association Of America 1962, Player Of The Year To Mickey Mantle, For His Outstanding Achievements And Rich Contributions To Baseball." The award was given at a January 1962 ceremony which paid tribute to both Mantle and Roger Maris as co-players of the year in homage to the 1961 season during which they captivated fans with an historic chase to break Babe Ruth's single season home run record. An included 8"x10" photograph shows the M&M Boys at the ceremony with award plaques in hand. It has been signed (marker, 9/10 out of 10) by both Mantle and Whitey Ford who received his World Series MVP Award.
