Lot 52

Description: Sheet of Babe Ruth's c.1940s stationary with several Ruth related pieces from Joe Bihler incl. (2) mailing envelopes and (2) Sporting News letters (GD-EX) Includes a blank sheet of c.1940s "Babe Ruth New York" stationary with the block letter name printed in a manner suggesting it was meant to be folded in half for use (some tear to upper right corner and other light wear/toning); (2) envelopes which were sent to Ruth business associate Joe Bihler. Each is hand addressed and one has Ruth's name printed on back flap (postmarked 1938, minor wear and a horizontal fold). The other has his name and return address handwritten (name slightly obscured due to wear) (postmarked 1942, heavy wear and split and all but 1 edge). These appear to be done in the hand of either Ruth's wife or a secretary whom was attempting to mimic his writing; December 27, 1941 letter to Bihler from noted publisher Charles Spink (on Sporting News letterhead) in which sends his thanks for a letter Ruth had recently written about the soon to be released book on the life of Lou Gehrig. He asks for Ruth's permission to use a reworked version as the forward; additional February 1942 followup letter from Spink to Bihler prompting the requested work by Ruth; and a printed copy of what appears to be an early version of the Ruth "letter" which was the subject of the correspondence. Varying degrees of wear throughout: GD-EX ($250-$500)
