Lot Number: 76

Description: Notre Dame football helmet attributed to Johnny Lattner c.1951. Very fine quality leather hard shell helmet has reinforced ear padding and a central black striping along the top. The reverse of the helmet has a period piece of linen tape inscribed "Lattner" in black grease marker. The helmet exhibits moderate use including some typical surface scuffing. The attribution of the helmet may be traced to the former owner of the Philadelphia Eagles, Leonard Tose. Mr. Tose, a Notre Dame alumnus, obtained the helmet from the locker room in 1951 and later presented it to his godson, Mr. Steve Sabol, who is now President of NFL Films. The helmet has been in Mr. Sabol's personal collection until its current offering. Johnny Lattner was an exceptional collegiate halfback for the University of Notre Dame, having won the Maxwell Award twice (1952 and 1953) and captured the Heisman Trophy in 1953. Lattner was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1954 but after playing for only one season, suffered a career-ending knee injury. Desirable period helmet with attribution to one of the more storied collegiate football players of the period. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions and letter of provenance from Steve Sabol: EX
