Description: Lou Gehrig presentational wristwatch c.1920s. Fine quality Elgin young ladies wristwatch has a silver-on-blue enamelwork geometric design on the front. Inscribed on the back, "From Lou Gehrig To Friend Le Morn Pipgras". The watch was given to Ms. Pipgras, daughter of Yankees teammate George Pipgras, during the late 1920s. During a game in Chicago, a local jeweler had a sign in the outfield as part of a contest; any player who hit a home run at the sign, or over the sign, would receive a watch from the jeweler. Gehrig hit two home runs and received two watches. The other watch was given to Earle Combs' son. Gehrig was quite fond of the young Pipgras and sent her a box of chocolates every year on her birthday. Includes a charming vintage 3"x5" photograph picturing Ms. Pipgras wearing the offered watch as well as a letter of provenance from Ms. Pipgras: EX
