Lot Number: 1246

Description: Boston Red Sox road jersey attributed to Joe Cronin c.1938-41. Grey flannel jersey and pants show light to moderate usage wear incl. some staining. Jersey has taggings removed from collar and retains original "Boston" lettering across the front with #4 on back. Sleeves have been slightly "turned back" and cuffed. Pants have rectangular McAuliffe tag and black rectangular Wilson tag along with chain stitched inseam measurement. Dating is attributed to 1938, 1940, or 1941 as in all other years that Cronin was with the Red Sox there were various sleeve patches and on the offered shirt there are no vestiges of such patches. Obtained by John MacIntyre who was a Boston English High School student. The young man was nicknamed "Big John" and always had to order special oversized uniforms for the baseball team. Cronin learned of this fact and promptly donated one of his uniforms to accommodate the young MacIntyre. The uniform was kept by MacIntyre until his death in 1994 and then willed to Brian Riley whose letter of provenance is included with the lot. Rare and desirable early Hall of Famer game shirt with direct provenance. Includes LOA from SCD Authentic David Bushing/Dan Knoll: EX
