Description: Spalding leather flat top helmet attributed to Jim Thorpe c.1905-1915. Early football head gear relic which originated directly from the collection of Jim Thorpe showing heavy overall usage wear. Retains small Spalding logo stamping on ear flaps along with 1902 Patent date. Helmet exhibits general wear throughout with losses to interior padding and is missing leather covering on top of helmet. Based on the style and dating of the helmet several possibilities exist as to when it was used during Thorpe's career. Incredibly rare offering of a surviving testament to Thorpe's hallowed football career. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this helmet will be donated by Joel Platt to the Jim Thorpe Association Oklahoma Hall of Fame. Includes letter of provenance from Joel Platt, xerox copies of period correspondence/postcard relating to Michael Lopota/Jim Thorpe, copy of the letter from Grace Thorpe acknowledging the donation of proceeds to Thorpe foundation, copy of letter from Thorpe HOF foundation acknowledging donation of proceeds, and xerox copy of a 1970 telegram received by Joel Platt from Patricia Thorpe.
