Description: Lot of (2) 1918 WWI related Christy Mathewson pieces. Poignant grouping of items that were significantly imoportant to Mathewson. Includes orig. Aug. 22, 1918 War Department appointment of Christy Mathewson to rank as Captain of Chemical Warfare Service. Issued by General Chief of Staff Peyton March and instructed Mathewson to report to Washington immediately. Orders are mounted on foldout display with matted photo on opposite side picturing Matty in full combat attire identified on back as belonging to Mrs. Mathewson. Lot also includes a telegram dated (2) days later from Mathewson to General Sibert in Washington noting that he would accept the appointment to Captain of the Chemical Warfare Dept. The orders were kept by Mathewson and then donated to his school until de-accession illustrating the importance that they represented in his life. The pair represent Mathewson's larger commitment to his country and as one of the greatest stars of his era place note to his quality as a U.S. citizen in addition to his baseball greatness: EX
