Description: 1955 Bill Russell DePaul University Invitational Tournament Most Valuable Player award (Sports Illustrated Cover photo match). Large figural trophy presented to Russell as the Most Valuable Player of the DePaul Invitational Tournament in 1955. As cited on page 134 of 2009 "The Dandy Dons" by James W. Johnson, "The Dons dismantled DePaul 82–59. Russell blocked 15 shots and was selected MVP. "They could name the score against any college team in the country," said one coach. DePaul coach, Ray Meyer said Russell was as good as the Minneapolis Lakers George Mikan." Gilt painted figural player finial is mounted atop a basketball pedestal on a columnar stand. Bakelite base has inscribed brass placard on the front. The trophy has had some repairs due to damage, most notably to the bakelite base, which had three large cracks repaired with small chip missing on back. 26" tall. Includes signed letter of provenance from Bill Russell: VG
