Lot Number: 4

Description: 1885 Baltimore Orioles large format photograph with Dennis Casey - rumored to the inspiration for "Casey at the Bat." Rare imperial size cabinet mounted sepia tone photograph showing uniformed team members is titled "Baltimore B.B. Club, 1885" along the upper edge. Players are identified on the mount and include Hardie Henderson, Mike Muldoon, Billie Barnie, Jimmy Macullar, and Dennis P. Casey. It has long been speculated that Casey, one of (3) players of that surname in the period and the only who was a skilled batsman, was the inspiration for the central figure in Ernest Thayer's famed work, "Casey at The Bat." The piece is framed to 17.25"x23.25" and displays well despite having heavy wear (that includes chipping/loss) to the edges. This effects some of the text which is then hand lettered onto the backing board to fill in missing portions. Central image has a vertical strip of wear running down the center and an egg shaped area (approx. 1.25"x2.5") on the right side has been inpainted. Marked "Cummins, Photo" at lower left. A visually arresting and highly uncommon early oversized team photo: see description
