Description: Important Pottsville Maroons "Worlds Champions" sweater c.1925-26. Heavy wool hooded sweater is done in a deep maroon with "Worlds Champions" across the back in scripted white felt. Devoid of tagging and in fine overall condition with some mild use and age related wear. The Maroons had taken the NFL by storm in 1925, their first season in the League, and finished with a 9-2 record edging out the Chicago Cardinals by a one game margin. Their record should have been good enough to claim the Championship but the title was given to Chicago on a technicality after Pottsville played in what was deemed to be an illegal post-season exhibition game. Although the Franchise was short lived (1920-29) their place within football history and lore is well cemented and substantive material related to their short tenure is both exceedingly rare and highly sought after. We can confirm no other example of this type sweater to have entered the marketplace and one other which has surfaced has been previously displayed within the Maroons exhibit at the Football Hall of Fame in Canton. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions: EX
