Lot Number: 186

Description: Scarce 1835 "Sports of Youth" primer booklet with "base ball" content. Incredibly obscure and rare eight page booklet with content regarding several youth sports games including a page and illustration devoted to "Playing Ball". The game described is clearly one of the early New England games of ball that developed into baseball with text as follows, "Ah! This is my favorite game. This is an excellent amusement for boys. How eager all the little fellows appear. One of them stands ready to toss the ball, one to knock it, and two to run after it, if they fail to catch it." A small color tinted illustrative engraving is found at the top of the page with the text. Dated 1835 on the front cover as published by S.Babcock in New Haven, CT. The book exhibits evident age and handling wear while remaining fully intact. One of the earliest published items with baseball relation that we have handled: GD-VG
