Lot Number: 43

Description: Christy Mathewson large format photographic composite by Carl Horner c.1909 - likely a unique presentational piece Magnificent large format photographic display piece has a series of (12) images of Christy Mathewson printed within. "Christie Mathewson" name appears across the top and an artistic rendering of a ball in hand serves as the background. "Copyrighted by Carl J. Horner Co. 1909, Boston Mass." mark appears at lower right of the image and there is a "Horner Boston" logo impressed just below in the matting. Print measures 8"x13.25" and it is on its' original 11.5"x17.5" heavy stock mount. The central portion shows minor toning and a touch of light wear, mount has scattered chipping, stains, a crack on right edge, and some other flaws. Horner ranks among the most important of all early baseball photographers and his body of work is among the most sought after within the genre. His photographic composites typically feature teams (or in some cases portraits of members of an entire League) however this is the first piece we can recall seeing with the focus being an individual player. It was presumably done as a presentational piece to Mathewson himself and it is reasonable to state that it is a unique survivor. Includes Mathewson Collection certificate of provenance: Image VG/EX, Mount GD
