Description: Fine 1954 Ted Williams Boston Red Sox professional model road jersey (SGC/Grob: Superior). Few players in baseball history have garnered the respect that Ted Williams earned during his illustrious 19 year career with the Boston Red Sox. Williams's statistics are among the most revered of any player in history: a lifetime batting average of .344, over 2,600 career hits, over 1,800 career RBI's, 521 lifetime home runs, and a remarkable .634 career slugging percentage, which is second only to Babe Ruth. Williams won the American League MVP award in 1946 and 1949 and nearly captured the award on several other occasions as well. The 1941 season in which he batted .406 has become almost mythical as he elected to bat in the final two games collecting six hits in his final eight at bats. Ted also won the AL Triple Crown in both 1942 and 1947. The offered jersey is a rare grey flannel road shirt from Williams's 1954 season with the Red Sox. The shirt presents in exemplary all original condition with evident use retaining strong visual appearance. The front retains its original "Red Sox" navy blue lettering with matching "9" on the back as the most recognized numeral in team...and league history. Tim McAuliffe manufacturer's label remains affixed to the tail front along with "1954 46 3in. 9" supplemental chain stitching. As seen in several other documented period Ted Williams jerseys (Including period photographic confirmations one of which dates to 1954) the tail was shortened in the period at the bottom edge apparently due to Ted's preference for comfort. The jersey was originally obtained by a Denver, CO gentleman who worked with Phllips 66 Petroleum company in the 1950s era. Several game used bats of the same era were also discovered including Bob Boyd and Jim Pagliaroni. The gentleman passed away in 1958 at which point the jersey (and other items) descended to his son and in turn grandson until its current offering. At this juncture in the history of the hobby, it is extremely uncommon for previously undiscovered game jerseys from elite level Hall of Fame players to surface. We have been fortunate to have previously offered several Williams jerseys of quality with this example soundly rating among the finest we have presented. Includes LOA from SGC/Grob (Superior): EX-EX/MT
