See a Picture of this Item 124 Historic game used baseball from the Inaugural 1933 All-Star Game signed by the game umpires. The Great Depression of the 1930s severely damaged American culture as it was known at the time, including the game of baseball, which experienced dwindling crowds and enormous financial challenges. In an effort to spur interest in the national pastime, the sports editor for the Chicago Tribune, Arch Ward, approached officials of the American and National Leagues. Ward's idea was pit the best of both leagues against each other in an All-Star game to be played in Chicago in conjunction with the "Century of Progress Exhibition". Set for Comiskey Park on July 6, 1933, before a huge crowd of 49,200, the game featured the finest players of the period including Gehrig, Gomez, Foxx, Klein, Simmons, Grove, Cronin, Terry, Frisch, and Babe Ruth. Appropriately, the American and National League teams were led by managers Connie Mack and John McGraw, respectively. The two grand old men of baseball had been battling each other on the field for nearly 30 years, dating back to their epic contests as managers of the Philadelphia Athletics and New York Giants. The offered baseball is one of only a scant few documented to have been used during the 1933 All-Star game and originates from the personal collection of Mule Haas. The ball itself is an off white J.Heydler National League baseball which has been inscribed, in Haas' hand, on a side panel, "Ball used in the AllStar game at Chicago July 6, 1933 American 4 National 2". Additionally, the four umpires for the game have signed the ball incl. Bill Dineen, Bill Klem, Bill McGowan, and Chas. Rigler. Signatures range from 6-8 out of 10 including the very rare autographs of Klem and McGowan. Other than the ball that Babe Ruth hit for the inaugural home run during the 1933 All-Star game which we auctioned in 2006, the offered baseball is the only other documented game used ball from that game that we have encountered. Includes LOA from James Spence Authentication: Range EX-EX/MT ($15,000.00-$25,000.00) $18,000.00

See a Picture of this Item 155 Significant Lefty Grove Philadelphia Athletics professional model hat c.1929-33. Lefty Grove began his baseball career in the sandlots of Baltimore, Maryland during the 1910-20s era. His legend grew to such heights that scouts and baseball officials alike were referring to him as one of the finest pitchers they had encountered before he had even played a day at the Major League level. In 1925, Balt. Orioles owner, Jack Dunn, finally agreed to sell the rights to Grove to the Philadelphia Athletics for a record $100,500, which, for the time, was an enormous amount of money. Grove would not disappoint. In addition to his lofty career statistics, all of which place Grove at the top of many categories, he accomplished a feat that best captures the sheer dominance he displayed during the period. During the 1928 season, Grove struck out the other side, twice, on just nine pitches. To place this feat in perspective, only two pitchers since have done this once: Sandy Koufax and Nolan Ryan. No pitcher has managed it twice other than Grove. Offered is an outstanding uniform item once worn by Lefty Grove as a member of the Phila. Athletics. The white bodied hat with blue bill displays its original "A" logo on the front. The interior retains its original leather headband, which exhibits evident use including 'buckling' from perspiration and wear. Spalding mfg. stampings remain visible within the leather band, and "Grove" chain stitching in the leather remains fully intact with appropriate wear. Overall condition is outstanding given its age and original materials, with a small area of loss to the top center of the bill, and some general light soiling from period use. To our knowledge, this is the only surviving Lefty Grove game used hat extant and is one of the finest Hall of Fame member game hats to have entered the hobby. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions, Inc: EX ($20,000.00-$30,000.00) $26,000.00

Lightly toned B.Johnson AL baseball signed on a side panel in black fountain pen, "C.A. Bender 1911 World's Series With Giants 3-2". Signature and salutation rate 7/8 out of 10. The ball exhibits evident game use including some surface abrasions to the side panels. Based on the notation of a "3-2" score, the offered ball was likely used during Game #3 of the 1911 World Series in which the A's defeated the Giants, and their pitcher Christy Mathewson, behind Frank Baker's second home run of the World Series. Playing career Chief Bender single signed baseballs are virtually non-existent with note to the World Series game use attribution. See a Picture of this Item 162 Historic "Last Out" baseball from Game #4 of the 1913 World Series. The ongoing rivalry between the AL Philadelphia Athletics and the NL New York Giants was showcased once again in the 1913 World Series. The Giants and A's had previously battled for the title in 1905 and 1911 with each team capturing one championship. The 1913 Series was anticipated to be one of the most hotly contested since the game's inception in 1903. Game #4 was played at Shibe Park in Philadelphia with the Athletics sending their ace Chief Bender to the mound. Bender threw a complete game to defeat the Giants by a score of 6-5 bringing the A's within one victory of what would be another World Championship. Offered is a toned and lightly soiled B.Johnson American League baseball which is inscribed as having been caught for the final out in Game #4 of the 1913 World Series. The ball is notated in period fountain pen in what is believed to be Bender's own hand, "Last ball of 4th game-1913 World Series Pct. 10th Athletics 6 Giants 5 Bender/Schang vs. Demaree/McLean Marquard/Wilson". The ball is also notated, "Final put out Foul caught by Schang Hit by Grant". The ball itself exhibits evident use incl. an area of impact on a side panel. It is amazing to ponder that this very baseball was in fact the final pitch thrown by Bender in what ended up being his fourth consecutive victory in World Series play. Especially historic baseball of great rarity. Includes LOA from James Spence Authentication and letter of provenance from the family: EX ($7,500.00-$10,000.00) $10,000.00

See a Picture of this Item 163 Significant 1910 Phila. Athletics team auto. baseball. Simply stated, the 1910 Athletics were one of the most dominant teams in Major League history. The team featured the famed $100,000 infield of Baker, Barry, Collins, and McInnis. Additionally, the A's pitching staff had a collective ERA of 1.78, which remains the lowest in the history of the American League. The Chicago Cubs were steamrolled by the mighty A's in the 1910 World Series by a total of four games to one. Offered is an extraordinarily rare T.J. Lynch National League baseball with "1910" dating stamps signed by (14) members of the World Champion Athletics. Players include Bender, Coombs, J.Shibe (owner), Derrick, Strunk, Hartsel, Thomas, Oldring, Lord, Myers (unknown), Robert P. ?, Davis, Lapp (scarce, died in 1920), and Eddie Plank (scarce, died in 1926). The ball itself remains very clean with light age toning and bright original stampings. Signatures range from 5-8 out of 10 with the majority rating 7 or better. The rarity of pre-1920s era World Championship team signed baseballs is well documented, but the rarity of 1910 era World Championship team signed baseballs is virtually immeasurable. One of the finest World Championship team autographed baseballs to have entered the collecting marketplace. Includes LOA from James Spence Authentication and letter of provenance from the family: Ball: EX-MT, Signatures: Range VG-NM ($10,000.00-$20,000.00) $11,000.00

See a Picture of this Item 168 Shortly after discovering he had been diagnosed with a terminal illness, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Lou Gehrig removed himself from the Yankees lineup on May 2, 1939. On July 4, the Yankees honored Gehrig with an incredible on field celebration attended by teammates, former colleagues, and dignitaries alike. It was on this day that Gehrig delivered his famed "Luckiest Man" speech. In his remarks, Gehrig expressed concern not for his own well-being, but for his team, his teammates, and his wife, concluding with, "When you have a wife who has been a tower of strength and shown more courage than you dreamed existed - that's the finest I know. So I close in saying that I might have been given a bad break, but I've got an awful lot to live for..." His humility in the face of such an insurmountable adversity was regarded by his peers as virtually immortal. Fitting for a man of Gehrig's integrity, the "Iron Horse" succumbed to the horrid disease on June 2, 1941, at 10:10 p.m., sixteen years to the day after he had first replaced Wally Pipp as first baseman for the New York Yankees. The model by which Gehrig played the game, and more importantly, lived his life, is a standard that even many of the greatest players in history have not achieved. It is for those reasons that treasured pieces of Lou Gehrig's baseball memorabilia garner such passionate interest from the collecting public. As such, we offer a spectacular 1938 New York Yankees home jersey worn by Lou Gehrig. Beautiful pinstriped Yankees home flannel shirt, which has properly faded ever so slightly to a light cream color, retains its original "NY" logo on the front and "4" on the reverse. "L.Gehrig" is chain stitched in red inside the collar along with Spalding manufacturer tagging. Small "38" year designation is chain stitched on the back of the interior tail. The jersey itself remains in outstanding original condition exhibiting evident use including some light soiling around the belt area (typically found on jerseys) and some light soiling around the back of the collar area. The left sleeve of the jersey displays shadowing of its original 1939 World's Fair patch depicting the Trylon, Perisphere, and "1939" dating which was removed in the period. The jersey remains in completely original condition with no restoration or repairs of any type. The origins of the offered shirt are nothing short of miraculous. John Ryan of Passaic, New Jersey was involved in forming an amateur baseball team for a church baseball league in 1938. As was customary in the period, Ryan went to the New York Yankees after the completion of the 1938 World Series to request the purchase of the Yankee players' used jerseys for his church league team. The price was $9.00 per jersey. Although the cost was not insignificant at the time, Mr. Ryan proceeded to purchase the complete roster of 1938 New York Yankees home jerseys. The shirts were then distributed to the respective church league players. As unbelievable as it may sound, tt was determined that Ryan would retain the Lou Gehrig shirt for repair patches should any of the other jerseys become damaged during play. Luckily for the sake of history and the Ryan family name, the team became defunct after one season and the shirt was not needed for repairs. The jersey was then relegated to Mr. Ryan's closet until its current offering by a family member. According to direct first person accounts by John Ryan, the jerseys were represented by the Yankees as having been worn during the 1938 World Series. Through period photography and film documentation, it is evident that the Yankees players wore the 1939 World's Fair patch on their sleeves in some, but not all, of the World Series games. Furthermore, based on comparisons to various period images of Lou Gehrig taken throughout the 1938 season (from May to September 1938), it is clear that Gehrig preferred the raglan sleeve style to the typical sewn in style worn by many other players. It is unclear whether this was for comfort, aches related to his as yet undiscovered illness, performance, or for superstitious reasons. Based on the superb condition preservation, originality, appearance, dating to 1938 World Championship season, possible World Series attribution, and unimpeachable provenance, the offered Lou Gehrig jersey is without question the finest of its type to have been sold at public auction. Includes LOA from MEARS Authentication (Graded A8.5), LOA from Hunt Auctions, Inc, photocopy of another Passaic, NJ amateur baseball team with John Ryan, and a notarized letter of provenance detailing the history of the jersey including attribution to the 1938 World Series: EX/MT-NM ($250,000.00-$350,000.00) $350,000.00
