Lot Number: 90

Description: Christy Mathewson's autographed and 1918 dated World War I uniform belt (PSA/DNA). Leather belt used by Christy Mathewson during World War I is a style known as the "Sam Browne Belt" which was approved for use by General Pershing. The Army mandated its' use by soldiers serving overseas in 1918 (then classifying it as the "Liberty Belt") and then for all service members in 1921. It has been signed (as a means of identification) on the inside, "Christy Mathewson, Capt. Chemical Warfare Service, U.S. Army" with an additional "Southampton Sept. 21 '18" notation to one side. The signature and handwriting rate approx. 6-6/7 out of 10. The belt displays mild use as intended and it appears to be the same (or very similar) to that which Mathewson can be seen wearing in a period image showing him in uniform beside Ty Cobb. Includes full LOA from PSA/DNA and Mathewson Collection certificate of provenance: Overall EX
