Description: June 20, 1919 Christy Mathewson "Chief of Chemical Warfare Service" letter of appreciation. June 20, 1919 dated letter has "American Expeditionary Forces, Headquarters Services of Supply, Office Chief of Chemical Warfare Service" typed across the top. Content reads, "Dear Captain Mathewson: Now that the C.W.S., A.E.F. is about to close its activities, I wish to take advantage of this opportunity of thanking you for the work which you did while you were Assistant Division Gas Officer of the 28th Division, Very truly yours, E.N. Johnson...Chief of Chemical Warfare Service." By the time the letter was written Mathewson was already suffering from the effects of accidental chemical exposure during a training exercise which would ultimately contribute to his early death.
