Description: Scarce 19th century fireman's base ball attributed pill box style hat with related photographic identification c.1870-80s. Very rare and desirable 19th century hat donned by fireman's base ball teams of the era featuring reinforced blue wool body having hard shell leather bill. Silver plated "1" with laurel garniture affixed to the hat front representing the related battalion. Black leather appointment bands remain intact with "FD" silverplated buttons. Hat shows evident use while remaining in fine original condition. Included with the hat is a period cabinet photograph depicting a uniformed fireman's base ball team wearing bib front jerseys with nearly identical hats including "1" decor with flanking laurel. Also visible in the image are bats, crescent padded gloves, and early base ball. 4"x6".
