Lot Number: 219

Description: Historically significant 1947 Jackie Robinson and Ben Chapman photograph (PSA/DNA Type I). Black and white 6.25"x8" photograph showing Jackie Robinson in his Rookie season standing beside Phillies Manager Ben Chapman. Chapman has been unrelenting in hurling racial slurs at Robinson during the Dodgers first game against Philadelphia during his historic Rookie campaign. As noted in the original May 10th dated paper caption on the back, Chapman was reprimanded by Commissioner Happy Chandler for his conduct and in efforts to mend fences the two agreed to pose for a photo together. Original examples of this image are notably rare with maybe a handful dating to the period having surfaced. Authenticated and encapsulated by PSA/DNA (Type I) and in fine overall condition with a touch of light wear. "Acme" stamp appears on the back and the paper caption has been taped in place (with some paper residue from where it had originally been glued remaining to one side): EX
