Lot Number: 130

Description: Significant Ty Cobb professional model baseball bat c.1911-15. L.Slugger double dash-dot-dash model bat measures 34 1/2" long and weighs 36oz. Bat exhibits strong usage wear including repaired handle crack and barrel wear consistent with usage. Centerbrand and Cobb facs. name stampings remain bold and pronounced. Two areas of period side writing from the Hillerich & Bradsby Co. remain visible on the sides of the bat as follows, "6-19-28 Cob-" and "Phila. Am. Lea. B.B.C.". This factory side writing is consistent with Cobb's playing tenure on the Phila. Athletics during the 1927 and 1928 seasons. Lathe markings remain visible on either end of bat indicating it was hand turned, surface remains fairly clean overall with a few minor areas of shellac residue most likely applied in the 1940's when many of the significant bats in the H&B collection were on a promotional tour of the country. Based on the markings and side writing on the bat we can conclude that Cobb either used this bat over a period of many years (possibly a favorite) or that it was used by Cobb several years after it was turned and then sent back to the factory in 1928. Cobb's batting statistics are truly astounding including lifetime totals of 3,034 games, .367 batting average, 11,429 at bats, 4,191 hits, 724 doubles, 297 triples, and 2,245 runs scored. The offered bat is one of the earliest dating period exemplars to surface and one of two known that has been factory side written. Monumental piece of game used equipment from one of the game's greats that originated directly from the Hillerich & Bradsby archives. Includes LOA from SCD Authentic D.Bushing/D.Knoll and letter of provenance from Hillerich & Bradsby Co.: EX
