Description: Rare 1897 figural ice hockey trophy. Exceptional quality sterling silver handled trophy is titled across the front, "Northampton Hockey Trophy" as presented by J.L. Filon. The front panel also features applied crossed hockey sticks, puck, and ice skates of exacting detail and craftsmanship. Reverse of the trophy is dated and inscribed to the winning team of the University of Md. and lists the team captain. Total height is 7 1/2" tall with repousse decor around the top rim and handles. The trophy remains in superb original condition and is marked on the bottom "Sterling" by "Hennegen, Bates, & Co." Period ice hockey trophies of this quality and dating period are virtually non existent with the first games played on U.S. soil occurring just a few years before the trophy dating in 1893.
