Lot 811

Description: Rare collection of (30) 1939 Hall of Fame first series postcards. These 3½" x 5½" commemorative postcards were issued honoring each of the charter members with a sepia-toned front picturing the player's plaque that hangs on the inside walls of the building as well as scenic non-player postcards. Inductees represented include Ruth, Young, Collins, Johnson, Lajoie, Mack, Wagner, Sisler, Alexander, Speaker, Mathewson, Cobb, Ewing, Cummings, Keeler, Anson, Radbourne, McGraw, Comiskey, Chadwick, Bulkley, Spalding, Wright, Cartwright and B. Johnson. Five others feature Hall of Fame interior scenes and two game scenes of Doubleday Field. These postcards are the earliest of several series of Hall of Fame plaque postcards produced by the Hall of Fame throughout the years. This inaugural series was produced only in 1939 in extremely limited quantity relative to subsequent series and was made available exclusively through the Hall of Fame’s modest gift shop. The back has a printed vertical address line that reads "Published by the National Base Ball Museum" in addition to a "Place Stamp Here" stamp box. These plaque postcards were sold individually or by the entire set. Few of these cards exist today with most plaque postcard collectors unaware of their existence. Group remains in outstanding unmarked, uncirculated condition: Range EX/MT-NM/MT
