Description: Spalding baseball bat attributed to James "Deacon" White c.1880-90. Early Spalding baseball bat measures 34" long and weighs 37.2oz. The bat has an early "Spalding" script logo at the centerbrand area with no other visible markings. Overall usage wear is heavy including a crack to the handle area and heavy checking to the back of the barrel. While it is unclear when and by whom the bat was used, there were several period newspaper accounts (one is included) dating to 1931 picturing White caring for his game used baseball bats including the bat he used to lead the league in hitting for 1877.
