Description: Significant 1910 Ty Cobb and Nap Lajoie Chalmers Award photograph. Rare original 5"x7" image pictures the two great leading batsmen accepting their motor cars as the winners of the disputed title of the leading hitter in the American League. At the culmination of a season-long contest, the two batters ended in a dispute for the title that would deliver a new Chalmers automobile to the winner. In the end, the Chalmers Company elected to elude the conflict by giving both players a new car. Although embroiled in controversy, this 1910 "award" is largely considered the first modern era Most Valuable Player award. Photo is stamped by noted Detroit photographer N.Lazarnick on the reverse and by the Baseball Magazine, from whose archives the image originated. Photo has two small corner chips and retains excellent contrast: EX
