Lot 667

Description: Unique United States President Ronald Reagan and Secretary General Mikhail Gorbachev autographed baseball. On December 8, 1987, President Ronald Reagan and Secretary General Mikhail Gorbachev opened the Washington Summit by signing the INF treaty, which, for the first time in history, agreed to the destruction of U.S. and Soviet nuclear missiles. Joe DiMaggio was one of only 130 American citizens to be invited to a state dinner held in Washington in honor of the historic occasion. During the visit, DiMaggio acquired the signatures of both world leaders on the sweet spot of an official Bobby Brown American League ball. Penned neatly in black ink, each signature remains very dark and bold rating 9/10 out of 10. A later statement Joe made during an interview reveals the significance of this particular ball to him personally. He recalled that "they were the only two autographs I ever soughtà I was a witness to history. I have done a lot of things in my time. But that day became one of the nicest days in my life and one of the most meaningful." Joe exclaimed that the only other signature he wished he had acquired on a baseball was Babe Ruth's. The offered example is the only such baseball that we have encountered and was without question one of the most meaningful items within the collection of Joe DiMaggio. Includes several photographs of Joe DiMaggio with the baseball and attending the event itself. The lot also includes LOA from James Spence Authentication: NM (with note to area of toning on the ball)
