Description: Significant Joe DiMaggio 1969 Greatest Living Player award set. During the celebration of the 100th anniversary of professional baseball, Babe Ruth was voted the "Greatest Player in Baseball History". Mrs. Ruth was present at the gala function held on July 21, 1969 in Washington, D.C. to accept the award on behalf of her late husband. Numerous other baseball greats were also on hand to receive honors for their various talents. The evening belonged, however, to the Yankee Clipper. Joe DiMaggio was honored with three titles at the historic gathering as "Baseball's Greatest Living Center Fielder", "Baseball's Greatest Center Fielder Ever", and of extreme importance "Baseball's Greatest Living Player". While others had lofty statistics and better career numbers, DiMaggio had the impressive accolades of his peers with regard to his level of play: Joe was simply the greatest player I ever saw, as well as the most graceful. - Ted Williams He had no weaknesses. -Tommy Henrich Heroes are people who are all good with no bad in them. ThatÆs the way I always saw Joe DiMaggio. He was beyond question one of the greatest players of the century. - Mickey Mantle. The trophies, each measuring 10" tall, are comprised of a black onyx base with an applied brass placard on the front inscribed to DiMaggio along with the Major League Baseball 100th Anniversary logo. A gold baseball is situated atop the base surrounded by a figural brass ring. Considering the innumerable baseball greats that graced Major League stadiums for the first 100 years of baseball, it is a true testament to the respect accorded to Joe DiMaggio that he was honored with not one but three awards. Included with the awards is a Major League Baseball leather presentational album with gilt lettered titling on the front cover that includes DiMaggio's name. Interior includes numerous photographs taken during the event including Joe holding the awards, Joe with Joe Cronin, Joe with Mrs. Babe Ruth, and Joe with other recipients incl. Willie Mays and Casey Stengel. Lot also includes a large format 11"x14" black and white image of the winners including DiMaggio.
