Lot 386

Description: Lot of (2) significant Joe DiMaggio photographs. Pair of original black and white images taken on February 17, 1943 when Joe DiMaggio enrolled in the U.S. Army to join the war effort during World War II. One photograph pictures DiMaggio taking his soldier's oath with the U.S. flag providing a fitting backdrop to the right. The other photo pictures DiMaggio signing his payroll paperwork. Each image measures 6 1/2"x8 1/2" and retains its original paper identification label on the reverse. The "oath" image has a small corner crease at bottom right. In comparison to all of Joe DiMaggio's many honors within the game of baseball, it is his voluntary entry into the U.S. military for which many of his followers have the greatest respect. DiMaggio was in the prime of his career and arguably was one of the biggest celebrities in the world. It was widely understood that the primary reason he was not sent to the front lines was due to concerns of the U.S. government that should he be wounded or killed in action it would devastate the morale of the troops and the country as a whole. The offered images were the only two of their type within DiMaggio's personal effects and stand as a testament to his status as true American hero: EX
