Description: Fine October 1, 1949 Joe DiMaggio Day presentational trophy with related album. Significant lot of items as presented to DiMaggio on "Joe DiMaggio Day" held at Yankee Stadium on October 1, 1949. The Yankees were playing the Red Sox in a two game series to decide the American League pennant. During the first of the two games, DiMaggio was presented with a myriad of gifts including: Cadillac automobile, Dodge auto for his mother, Cris-Craft boat, Longine Baro Thermo calendar watch, Waltham watch chain knife, a wallet with religious gifts, golf cuff links, gold belt buckle, 14-karat gold cufflinks and tie pin, 51" loving cup trophy, Admiral television set, 14-karat gold key chain autographed in links, silver loving cup, 25 volumes of Joe DiMaggio Capitol records for Yankee Juniors, driving and sun glasses for Yankee Juniors, Christmas candy and baseball and bat, 500 Joe DiMaggio shirts in Joe's name to Yankee Juniors, ship's clock, oil painting of Joe DiMaggio, carpeting for his living room in Amsterdam, NY, a Westinghouse toaster, a 14-karat gold money clip, open house privileges at hotels Concourse Plaza and Martinique in the Bronx, Il Progresso newspaper medal of honor, 300 quarts of Cardini ice cream for any institution designated by Joe, a statuette neckerchief and clip from the Boy Scouts of America, an air-foam mattress and box spring, Fond du Lac Wisconsin cheese, 14-karat gold watch with diamond numerals from the Italian Welfare Association of Elizabeth, NJ, a case of shoestring potatoes, a case of Ventura County oranges, a sack of walnuts, a case of lemonade and frozen lima beans, a cocker spaniel from the American Spaniel Club, and taxi service for 300 fans from Newark ("This ride is on Joe D.") from Brown and White Cab Company of Newark, NJ. The accolades for Joe DiMaggio were seemingly endless. Included in the lot is a fine two handled loving cup style brass figural trophy featuring a large batting figure on the top with #5 on the back of the jersey. Front of the trophy is inscribed "Ray E. Dodge Trophy Joe DiMaggio Day Yankee Stadium October 1, 1949". The trophy remains mounted on its original wooden pedestal base and has an applied brass placard on the front inscribed, "Presented to Joe DiMaggio 'On His Day' On behalf of the Employees of the Ray E.Dodge Company Who have enjoyed many days Watching Joe and the Yankees". The trophy itself remains fairly clean with some light spotting to the patina from age; a small area around the neck of the batter has been resoldered: EX. The lot also includes a leather bound presentational album given to Joe at the ceremonies which features: original artwork incl. ink drawings and photography, various original photographs picturing the ceremonies including the trophy, Yankees front office auto. sheet with MacPhail/Topping/G.Weiss, New York Yankees auto. team sheet with DiMaggio/Stengel/Rizzuto/Berra/Mize/Keller, Red Sox auto. team sheet with Wiliams/Combs/Cuyler/McCarthy/D.DiMaggio, various signed letters of congratulation incl. New York Governor T.Dewey/New York Mayor O'Dwyer, Frank Sinatra typed letter signed "Frankie", 2" diameter pin issued to "Gus Fan" for Joe DiMaggio Day, several pages devoted to the Yankees pennant clinching game and 1949 W.Series including 1949 World Series program (loose interior pages): EX-MT. Joe DiMaggio Day was one of the more significant celebrations of DiMaggio's career. The words he spoke that day were among the most memorabile of his life: "When I was in San Francisco, Lefty O'Doul told me: 'Joe, don't let the big city scare you. New York is the friendliest town in the world.' This day proves it. I want to thank my fans, my friends, my manager Casey Stengel; my teammates, the gamest, fightingest bunch of guys that ever lived. And I want to thank the good Lord for making me a Yankee." Wonderful, intact collection of materials as presented to Joe DiMaggio at Yankee Stadium in 1949 with unimprovable provenance.
