Description: Joe DiMaggio's crutches c.1934-36. Pair of vintage wooden crutches remaining in original condition with a desirable 'alligatored' surface. The crutches were most likely used by Joe in either one of two scenarios. The first possibility would be in 1934 when Joe suffered two consecutive knee injuries from chance accidents, the second of which caused him to sit out the remainder of the 1934 season with the San Francisco Seals. Several period newspaper articles make reference to a splint on Joe's injured leg. The second would be in early 1936 when he suffered a severe burn on his foot from a sun lamp causing him to miss the first month of his rookie season with the Yankees. Joe also used crutches in the late 1940s after foot surgery but they were of a different type and construction than the offered set. Poignant vintage item symbolizing Joe's battle with injuries that shortened his career by at least several years. Includes a period photo of Joe seated with crutches which is included for display only as the pair is from the 1940s: EX
