Description: Fine 1935 Joe DiMaggio Pacific Coast League Most Valuable Player trophy. During the 1934 Pacific Coast League season, Joe DiMaggio had several unusual accidents injuring his knee on two separate occasions. At the time of the incidents, he was being courted by numerous Major League baseball scouts who became leery of DiMaggio due to the injuries. The Yankees scout Bill Essex would not give up on DiMaggio. After a dogged pursuit and a doctor's inspection of Joe's knee, he convinced the Yankees to purchase the rights to DiMaggio for $25,000 and five minor league players. DiMaggio entered the 1935 season with the Seals driven to show that he had what it takes to make it in the Major Leagues. Joe simply destroyed PCL pitchers during the 1935 season ending with a .398 batting average, 154 RBI's, 173 runs scored, 34 home runs, 18 triples, 48 doubles, and an incredible 270 hits. Joe's place in the history of the storied Pacific Coast League was sealed and he was off to New York for the 1936 season. Figural art nouveau style trophy features dual column supports flanking an angel holding a laurel wreath. Large batter figural remains on the top pedestal retaining its original bat. The white medal base is painted black and has an applied copper placard inscribed, "Presented to Joe DiMaggio San Francisco In recognition of being named the Most Valuable Player of Pacific Coast League in 1935 by a committee for the Sporting News." The trophy stands an impressive 22" tall retaining a beautiful original finish with natural copper patination.
