Description: Important 1933 Joe DiMaggio 61 Game Hit Streak presentational pocketwatch. On May 28, 1933, Joe DiMaggio collected a double while playing with the San Francisco Seals in a game played against Portland. He would not play in another game without collecting at least one hit until July 26, 1933, shattering the Pacific Coast League record for consecutive games with a base hit. On July 14, 1933, on the occasion of Joe's 50th straight game with a hit, Angelo Rossi, the Mayor of San Francisco, was on hand to present Joe with a gold pocketwatch on behalf of the Seals and the city of San Francisco in honor of setting the new Pacific Coast League record at 50 games. DiMaggio would continue on to end at 61 total games before being stopped by Ed Walsh, Jr. (son of HOF'er Ed Walsh) on July 26th. Hamilton watch is marked 14K gold and remains in original as issued condition. The backplate is engraved, "Presented to Joe DiMaggio by the San Francisco Baseball Club for batting safely in sixty one consecutive games Pacific Coast League Record 1933". The engraving was done afterwards as the streak had obviously not been completed at the time of presentation on July 14th. Exterior of the case has some light general wear with some age toning to the glass facing on the watch. Includes a period 14K gold chain found along with the watch as well as Joe DiMaggio's personal photograph of the watch presentation by Mayor Rossi at Seals stadium on July 14, 1933. Image measures 11"x14" in its original frame as it had hung in the DiMaggio home for many years. Additionally, the lot includes an original 12"x16" sepia tone photograph picturing Joe DiMaggio standing on the field with his parents and sister after receiving the watch. The photo retains excellent clarity and contrast but has surface wrinkling and some edge tears. While Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hit streak will always stand as the benchmark for all endurance based records in baseball, it is staggering to comprehend the 1933 accomplishment by the 18 year rookie who was playing against the finest Minor League talent in the country. The 1933 presentational pocketwatch represents the first professional baseball award of significance in Joe DiMaggio's career and is one of the most important within the collection: EX-MT
