Lot 1001

Description: Lot of (2) 1938 Joe DiMaggio New York Yankees player contracts with related correspondence. After capturing the 1937 American League Most Valuable Player honors along with a myriad of other accolades, Joe DiMaggio was intent on, and due for, a large salary increase. He had made $15,000 in 1937 and was interested in receiving $40,000 for the 1938 campaign. Col. Ruppert and the Yankees insisted that they would not budge and sent Joe the obligatory $15,000 contract on January 20, 1938. The salary dispute became national sports news as both sides dug into their respective positions. The holdout built to the point where Joe missed the very opening of the Yankees Regular season and finally agreed to the Yankees' best offer of a one year deal for $25,000. Offered is the original set of 1938 Joe DiMaggio New York Yankees contracts sent by Ed Barrow to Joe DiMaggio in January of 1938. The contracts are identical (one for each side) and call for a salary of $15,000. There are no signatures on the contracts as they were obviously not accepted by DiMaggio. Includes the original mailing envelope and typewritten letter sent to DiMaggio signed by Ed Barrow. Very interesting DiMaggio related documents with relation to one of the more notable baseball salary disputes of the era. Includes LOA from James Spence Authentication (Barrow letter): EX-MT
