The photo is adhered to a rigid cardboard backing. Period writing on the back in pencil reads, "Feb. 26, 1926 Walter Johnson & Ty Cobb". The poignancy of this photo lies not only in the quality of the image, but in the fact that Johnson and Cobb, respectively considered the greatest pitcher and hitter of all-time, shared overlapping careers. In fact, Ty Cobb faced Johnson more times than any other batter-pitcher matchup in baseball history. Cobb also managed the first hit allowed in Johnson's career. In this 21 1/2"x10" panoramic photograph of the Detroit Tigers team posed on the field at DetroitÆs Navin Field, the rookie Haney stands shoulder to shoulder with the veteran Cobb at the center of a lineup that also includes Harry Heilmann. The image includes text that reads "The Detroit Baseball Club - American League Season 1922" above the players æ images with the playersÆ last names and positions faintly visible beneath them. Photographer's mark from the National Press photographic Service and copyright date "1922" appears faintly in the lower right. Unused die-cut schedules measuring 5 1/4"x6 1/4" (unfolded) feature image of Stars manager Fred Haney and were intended to be folded to sit upright on a table-top. Haney returned home to Los Angeles (and the Coast League) as the radio play-by-play broadcaster for the Hollywood Stars for six seasons, starting in 1943. In 1949, he moved back into the dugout as the manager of the Hollywood club. During his four years (1949-52) as manager, the Stars won two PCL pennants. These schedules remain unfolded and unused. See a Picture of this Item 137 Fred Haney's folk art baseball bench c.1940. Fine quality folk art bench is comprised of (20) bats and (11) baseballs. The arms and sides are structured from the following Louisville Slugger commemorative black bats: 1957 Braves World Champions (2), 1940 NL All-Star (2), 1940 AL All-Star, 1939 Reds NL Champions (2) and 1939 Yankees World Champions. The bottom front of the bench features two Fred Haney model Louisville Slugger black bats. The back of the bench includes the following Louisville Slugger player model bats each separated by a baseball: Roy Cullenbine, Myril Hoag, Don Heffner, Rip Radcliff, Chet Laabs (block letter), George McQuinn, Bernie Berardino, Walter Judnick, Harland Clift and Bob Swift (block letter). A few autographs are present on some of the baseballs including Fred Haney, Roger Peckinpaugh and Joe McCarthy. The 39"x50"" bench is sturdily constructed and well preserved. Accompanying the bench is a copy of a 1950's magazine article that includes a picture of Haney seated on this bench in his home next to a large trophy he received for winning the 1957 National League pennant. One of a scant few of these highly desirable baseball related folk art benches to have entered the collecting marketplace. Grey zip-front flannel road jersey features Braves lettering and tomahawk in heavy felt stitched on front and embroidered Braves logo patch on left sleeve. Haney's number "2" is stitched on the front and back in heavy felt. Wilson manufacturer's tag (size 44) remains on the front tail with wash tag below and separate year designation tag featuring "1957" in red chain stitch on white felt. A felt tag in the collar reads "Haney Mgr." in red chain stitch. Perfectly matching pants feature similar Wilson tagging (size 38) and wash tag in the front waistband and spate felt tags in the back of the waistband featuring "Haney Mgr." and "1957" respectively in red chain stitch. Haney's original blue belt remains in the belt loops of the pants. Other uniform components include a pair of heavy blue wool stirrups and a second pair of blue stirrups with red and white striping. Haney's professional model Milwaukee Braves cap is also included. The size 7 1/4 cap is manufactured by KM Pro Cap and remains in new, unused condition with the original KM Pro Cap paper insert in tact on the interior. Haney's name "F. Haney" is written under the bill in black marker. Apart from the cap, the uniform shows appropriate, but not excessive wear, and retains superb presentation quality. All components are completely original and unaltered. Complete and visually impressive ensemble is an immensely important artifact from the most prolific season in Braves history.
