The grouping includes the highly desirable first series which features many of the game's great early players such as Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and Honus Wagner. It is worth noting that the uncut sheet format for this issue is seldom found. Relatively significant offering of the Steele's personal postcard display, which to date, remains one of the most revered issues of the modern era. See a Picture of this Item 2 1840 handwritten and franked letter from Cooperstown, N.Y. by Postmaster "S. Doubleday". One-page letter was handwritten by S. Doubleday on March 20th, 1940. Letter was folded, wax sealed, addressed, and franked in S. Doubleday's hand. S. Doubleday was the brother of Abner Doubleday, who was credited by some to have invented the game of baseball in Cooperstown, New York in 1839. S. Doubleday served as Cooperstown's postmaster. Lineups are written in pencil and game is neatly scored showing the Olympic club prevailing by the score of 20-11. Features advertising on the back by sporting goods dealer Heege & Keefe of Brooklyn, N.Y. Scorecard is accompanied by a copy of an article from the July 7, 1875 edition of The New York Clipper featuring the game's results. Original scorecard for a game played on April 29, 1886 features printed lineups incl. opposing pitchers Hoss Radbourne and Mickey Welch, as well as Hall of Famers Ward, Ewing, O'Rourke and Connor. Scored in pencil showing New York prevailing by a score of 5-4. Copies of period newspaper articles about the game read in part, "This, the opening championship game of the season, was one of the best played and most exciting games ever witnessed in New York, and was greatly enjoyed by the 12,000 spectators." Articles also include box score and comprehensive editorial on the game itself and the pomp and circumstance of the event as a whole. Scorecard shows general handling wear and minor soiling. Full size 34" long finely grained bat has been hand painted in the manner of a 19th century ring decorated baseball bat. The barrel displays a blue painted ring with a central white ring bearing a "Reach" design in blue/white. Applied textured handle tape is also present. Interesting rendering from the collection of Frank and Peggy Steele, who were among the earliest collectors of baseball related folk art. Ultra scarce regional issue produced in 1940 by Crowley's Dairy of Binghamton, NY included 18 cards picturing members of the Binghamton minor league club. The nine different cards offered here amount to half of a set and include the following players: Silvane, Bergman, Groske, Robinson, Graham, Suder, Volpe, Milosevich and Adlam. All of the cards have either tape at the top and bottom or paper loss where tape was removed. Five of the cards were utilized as postcards with their backs bearing addresses, stamps and postmarks. See a Picture of this Item 40 Rare Hack Wilson auto. personal check. Dated July 5, 1931 and made out to "Chicago Cubs", personal check is signed "L. R. Wilson". All writing is in green fountain pen, rating 9 out of 10. Cancellation holes only touch the "L" in Wilson's signature. Red bank stamp on reverse has bled through to the front slightly but does not significantly detract from the overall display quality of the check. Two vertical fold lines are visible as well. Hack Wilson checks are among the toughest of all early HOF'ers to obtain and are seldom seen in the marketplace. The offered example, being made out the Chicago Cubs in 1931, Wilson's last season with the team, is an ideal example in all respects.
