See a Picture of this Item 48a Significant November 24, 1894 Harvard vs. Yale football program. Fine quality hard-bound program issued for the annual Harvard versus Yale football game features in depth team and player information along with numerous period photographs and advertisements. The contest was the last of an era, as the rules changed dramatically after the exceptional violence that occurred during the 1894 game, which became known as the "bloodbath at Hampden Yards." Player frustrations erupted into multiple acts of violence inclusive of a severe eye injury with profuse bleeding, broken collarbone from a "dirty" tackle, multiple fights and a severe concussion which left a player in a coma. So great was the level of violence that the rules of the game itself were modified to limit such occurrences in future play. The bound program remains in fine general condition with some minor wear to the cover edges and a bit of age toning to some interior pages. One of the rarest and most desirable 19th century football related publications: EX ($1,000.00-$1,500.00) $750.00

See a Picture of this Item 50 Rare "Football" figural group by John Rogers c.1890's. The most desired and valuable of the various Victorian figural sculptures by noted artist John Rogers depicts a group of three men tackling a ball carrier. The group was modeled after Rogers' three sons and the captain of the Yale football team, William Herbert. Rogers' sons all attended Yale, and along with Herbert, were documented to have posed for studies preceding the creation of the offered statue. The piece consists of a plaster composite with light brown pottery glaze. Rogers' attention to detail is evident in the various nuances of the piece including the players' uniforms and melon style football. Given its original fragility, the offered example remains in fine overall condition with some typical inpainting to some areas of surface abrasion and some minor damage/chips to sensitive areas such as the ball carrier's nose. Impressed "Football" titling remains on the front of the base with "Rogers New York" impressed onto the top of the base. See a Picture of this Item 74 1924 Pottsville Maroons panoramic photograph. When Dr. John G. Striegel became the owner of the Pottsville Maroons, he vowed to join and dominate the National Football League. To show NFL president Joe Carr that the Maroons could deliver a large audience, Doc Striegel and thousands of Pottsville fans traveled to watch the team defeat the Atlantic City Roses in 1924. This 10"x43" panoramic photo captures the throngs of staunch Maroons fans stacked up in the stands behind the team with Striegel seated in the foreground wearing a black hat. Text printed in the lower right area of the photo reads, Fandom of Pottsville, Pa. at the A.C. Roses-Pottsville Maroons Football Game: Atlantic City, N.J. November 9th, 1924 Score-Pottsville 22 - A.C. 0. StiegelÆs plan worked, and in 1925, Pottsville, a small coal-mining town 90 miles northwest of Philadelphia, not only joined the NFL, but accomplished the unthinkable, dominating the NFL in its inaugural season. At the time, the Philadelphia Inquirer called the Maroons "The Perfect Football Machine." On Dec. 6, 1925, the Pottsville Maroons beat the runner-up Chicago Cardinals at Comiskey Park 21-7 in what was widely believed to be the NFL championship game. At the time, the NFL was struggling to survive while college football was king. Pottsville then played the Notre Dame Four Horsemen in an exhibition game in Philadelphia. Experts believed the fledgling NFL was still decades away from competing with college football, but on a last-second field goal the Maroons beat Notre Dame 9-7. Although Pottsville's victory over Notre Dame legitimized the NFL, it destroyed the town and the team which made it all possible. Claiming the Maroons had violated the territory of another franchise by playing Notre Dame, the NFL suspended Pottsville and awarded the 1925 Championship to the Cardinals. For more than 80 years, fans of the Pottsville Maroons have fought to have the 1925 title returned to them. The story of this team and its struggle has been told in a recently published book titled "Breaker Boys" by author David Fleming (copy included), which features this panoramic photograph. The offered photo retains excellent clarity and contrast with only a few scattered light wrinkles and a couple of small border tears. A 1 1/2÷ inch section of the photo is missing from the bottom left border. Framed: VG-EX ($1,000.00-$1,500.00) DNS

Early Riddell model helmet displays the painted Rams horns on both side panels after the original design by the Rams' halfback Fred Gehrke who had studied art in college and first executed the design on their helmets in 1948. The original single bar facemask remains intact along with its leather chin strap, both of which are marked Riddell. Interior suspension padding remains fully intact with Riddell manufacturer stampings and Patent numbers. Ventilation holes are also found on the top of this particular helmet style, which is one of Riddell's earliest professional models. Two pieces of vintage linen tape are affixed on both interior ear areas with period ink notations, "11" and "Van" respectively in reference to Van Brocklin and his uniform number 11. Overall condition is nearly unimprovable exhibiting appropriate usage while retaining its structural and visual integrity. See a Picture of this Item 88 Scarce Los Angeles Rams professional model helmet with experimental radio system c.1950s with possible use by Norm Van Brocklin. Highly uncommon early helmet style created in the manner of the original helmet devised by two inventors, John Campbell and George Sarles. The two men had originally brought the innovative and very secretive idea to head coach Paul Brown of the Cleveland Browns in the Spring of 1956. The two men had surmised that a small radio receiver installed in the helmet would allow Coach Brown to communicate directly with the quarterback instead of sending the plays in with a substitute player. The idea was top secret and the Browns were able to use the device in as many as three games after an initial experimentation in a preseason game against Detroit. The news leaked out and other NFL teams scrambled to match the Browns new found technological advantage, but without much success. NFL commissioner Bert Bell believed that the Browns had an unfair advantage, and on October 18, 1956 the "radio helmet" was banned by the league. The offered example has a hand painted exterior shell which has masked any manufacturer's stampings that may have once been visible. Its interior leather padding remains intact, albeit dry from age, with some cracking to its core support. The interior padding itself is literally hard wired with a radio receiver inclusive of a cord with plug that protrudes from the rear of the helmet. It is accompanied by a matching set of headphones which were presumably used to radio in the signals from the coach to the quarterback. While there are no definitive markings or player labeling visible on the helmet, it is highly likely that this example was either worn by, or created for use by, the Rams quarterback Norm Van Brocklin. It was originally given to a family friend along with the other Van Brocklin items in the auction, and is being offered publicly for the first time. Based on the extremely small window of time in which this style of helmet was produced, it is certainly one of, if not the rarest professional helmet styles extant. This attribute coupled with its likely use by HOF quarterback Norm Van Brocklin solidifies its significance as an important NFL equipment artifact. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions: VG-EX ($5,000.00-$7,500.00) $1,750.00

The first AFL-NFL World Championship game held on January 15, 1967 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum was played as part of a new peace made between the two rival leagues. For just $12, you could have secured a reserved seat for the game between the Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs. Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt is credited with dubbing it the "Super Bowl", reportedly after bouncing his child's Superball. Anticipation for the landmark event was less than super, however, and the game failed to sell out. The contest saw Vince Lombardi's Packers manhandle the Chiefs in a 35-10 victory. It wasn't until Super Bowl III, on January 12, 1969, that the football world would be turned upside down, as "Broadway" Joe Namath's New York Jets stunned the Baltimore Colts 16-7. With parity on the field, the NFL-AFL merger gave the Super Bowl a status in modern American culture that surpassed even the World Series. It is the most eagerly anticipated, most expensive, and most watched event in sports. This near-complete anthology of original full Super Bowl tickets celebrates many unforgettable moments provided by the likes of Namath, Bradshaw, Staubach, Cszonka, Swann, Montana, Brady and others.
