See a Picture of this Item 119 Important 1908 Philadelphia Athletics team photograph with "Shoeless" Joe Jackson. Joe Jackson began his baseball career in 1900 at the tender age of 13 with the Brandon Mill baseball team in his South Carolina hometown. From an early age it was evident that Jackson was truly something special. Even the rural sandlot fields of South Carolina could not mask Jackson's raw talent and eventually the rest of the baseball world began to take notice. In 1908, Connie Mack and the Philadelphia Athletics purchased Jackson's contract from the Greenville Spinners of the Carolina Association for $325. Jackson had recently married and was reluctant to leave the comforts of his Southern hometown for the bustling Northeastern city of Philadelphia. Generally unhappy while in Philadelphia for portions of both the 1908 and 1909 seasons, Jackson had some trouble adjusting to life with the Athletics. In fact, on several occasions Connie Mack had to literally chase Jackson down after he fled the team. Consequently, he spent a portion of that time in the minor leagues. Jackson played most of the 1909 season with the South Atlantic League team in Savannah, Georgia for which he batted an astounding .358. It was clear that Jackson was simply not content with Philadelphia, and manager Mack was equally frustrated even though he clearly recognized the talent that Jackson possessed. Although Connie Mack was certainly one of the finest tacticians that the game has ever seen, he made a grave misjudgment in Jackson's case. After the 1909 season, Jackson was traded to the Cleveland Naps for Bris Lord and the rest is history. The offered original image pictures the 1908 Philadelphia Athletics team posed in full uniform at Shibe Park. Players include Frank Baker, Eddie Collins, Eddie Plank, Chief Bender, Connie Mack (mgr.), and a twenty year old rookie Joe Jackson. Image quality is absolutely flawless retaining its original contrast and clarity with literally no surface wear. Blank back is equally clean. The photo is one of only two original surviving exemplars known, and is without question the superior condition image by two to three grades. Additionally, this exact image was reproduced in the back of the Phila. Athletics program for the first game played at Shibe Park in 1909. Its immense scarcity is almost certainly due to the fact that Jackson's tenure with the 1908 team was very brief, playing in only five games. Fresh example from the collection of Philadelphia Athletics player Amos Strunk ranks as one of the most desirable 20th century baseball team related images: NM ($7,500.00-$10,000.00) $24,000.00

See a Picture of this Item 120 Philadelphia Athletics $100,000 Infield original photograph by Charles Conlon c.1909. Scarce original 8"x10" sepia tone image picturing Connie Mack's vaunted $100,000 infield of Stuffy McInnis, Danny Murphy, Frank Baker, Jack Barry, and Eddie Collins. The players were so named in response to a comment made by manager Connie Mack that he "would not part with them for even $100,000." The image actually pictures both Murphy and Collins even though Collins replaced Murphy at second base bumping him to the right field position. The photo retains excellent clarity typically found in Conlon's work with an area of paper loss to the backing of the surface emulsion on the far right edge (not apparent from the front). Stamped by Conlon on the reverse: EX-MT (with note to paper loss) ($750.00-$1,000.00) $2,500.00

See a Picture of this Item 121 Babe Ruth photograph c.1918. Original sepia tone 3 1/2"x6" image picturing Babe Ruth posed in a Boston Red Sox uniform leaning on a baseball bat. Photo quality remains very fine with a few imperfections to the surface emulsion in the background area. "Babe Ruth" is written in period ink at the bottom margin. Uncommon early original candid image of a young Ruth pictured just before his epic sale to the New York Yankees: EX-EX/MT ($1,500.00-$2,000.00) $2,000.00

The Beaneaters were one of the more powerful teams of the 19th century capturing eight NL titles with such players as Jimmy Collins, Hugh Duffy, Bobby Lowe, Kid Nichols, and Vic Willis. First example of this rare and early NL Championship award piece that we have encountered: EX ($1,500.00-$2,500.00) $4,500.00

See a Picture of this Item 123 Scarce 1919 Babe Ruth Boston Red Sox single signed baseball. The Curse; Harry Frazee; eighty six years between World Championships, and Babe Ruth "Sold to the Yankees". These utterances and innumerable others have become part of American sports and cultural history, and the very name "Babe Ruth" is now legendary. Nonetheless, Ruth's popularity did not explode until his epic sale from the Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankees. Ruth related objects dating to his early years with the Red Sox (1915-1919) are relatively rare and infrequently offered, with signatures from that period even scarcer. Offered is a Reach "American League" baseball bearing the stampings of Pacific Coast League president Allan T. Baum (Tenure: 1912-1919). The ball is signed across the sweet spot, "Babe Ruth" in blue fountain pen rating 8 out of 10. Ruth has notated on an adjacent side panel, "Oct. 20/19" in his hand rating 7/8 out of 10. The ball was likely signed during a series of barnstorming games Ruth played against Pacific Coast League teams led by Chicago White Sox player Buck Weaver, who would be banished from baseball in 1920 for his involvement with the 1919 World Series fix. The ball itself exhibits some light to moderate surface abrasions with the signature and dating contrasting nicely against the light cream colored ball. Outstanding rarity is among a scant handful of documented Red Sox era Babe Ruth single signed baseballs extant. Includes LOA from JSA: Ball: EX, Signature: EX/MT-NM ($10,000.00-$15,000.00) $16,000.00

See a Picture of this Item 128 Scarce 1917 Chicago White Sox team auto. baseball with "Shoeless" Joe Jackson. In 1917, an interesting and foreboding twist of fate occurred that would greatly benefit, and in many ways seal the fate of, the Chicago White Sox. The "Southsiders" had finished third and second in the American League for the 1915 and 1916 campaigns respectively. For the 1917 season, the White Sox added two key members, first baseman Chick Gandil, and shortstop Swede Risberg. They were, in part, the extra ingredient the Sox needed to take the American League title in 1917 en route to a World Series victory over the New York Giants. Ironically, those two very players, along with six others, would find themselves embroiled in the most infamous scandal in Major League Baseball history - the "fix" of the 1919 World Series. Offered is an extremely scarce and quite possibly unique surviving exemplar of a 1917 World Champion Chicago White Sox team-signed baseball. Lightly toned Ban Johnson AL baseball retains bold stampings with red and blue stitching. The ball has been signed by (15) members of the team as follows with those Black Sox who would later be banished from baseball identified with asterisks: Eddie Collins, Reb Russell, R.L. "Ziggy" Hasbrook, Dave Danforth, Chick Gandil *, Fred McMullin *, Happy Felsch *, U.C. "Red" Faber, Buck Weaver *, Ray Shalk, Shano Collins, Lefty Williams *, Byrd Lynn, Chas. "Swede" Risberg *, and "Shoeless" Joe Jackson *. The signatures range from 1 to 8 out of 10 with all but two remaining clearly legible. Interestingly, the Joe Jackson signature remains one of the strongest on the baseball, rating 7 out of 10. Jackson is a tragic figure in baseball history who, to this day, holds the third highest career batting average of all time at .356 behind Ty Cobb and Rogers Hornsby. He was illiterate, but learned to sign his name laboriously, which he almost never did, with the result that his signature is extremely rare on any medium. Only a few authentic autographs exist on a baseball, making this example that much rarer, historic, and desirable. Also, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first 1917 White Sox team baseball signed by seven of the "Eight Men Out" to have been offered at auction. The ball originated from a Massachusetts area family and is being offered publicly for the first time. The baseball represents an amazing historical sports rarity and is without question one of only a handful of World Championship team-signed balls that date from the 1910s era. Includes LOA from JSA: Overall: VG/EX-EX/MT ($25,000.00-$35,000.00) $26,000.00

See a Picture of this Item 174 Significant 1979 Thurman Munson New York Yankees home uniform. On Tuesday, July 24, 1979, the New York Yankees defeated the California Angels by a score of 6-5. The game was played before a crowd of 33,497, and frankly, nothing of significance occurred on the field. Thurman Munson played catcher, with one walk, a strikeout, and a flyout. During the game, Munson injured his legs during an awkward tumble to avoid an inside pitch from Angels' pitcher Mike Barlow. Although the Yankees played two more home games against the Angels on July 25th and 26th, Munson did not see game action on either evening. Although the July 24th contest was unremarkable at the time, it would turn out to be Thurman MunsonÆs final New York Yankees home game. The Yankees then went on the road for a six game trip from July 27th - August 1st through Milwaukee and Chicago. Munson primarily played either first base or designated hitter as a result of his injury. The offered New York Yankees home uniform remained in Thurman's Yankee Stadium locker, but would not again see game use as Thurman tragically passed away on August 2, 1979 in a plane crash. According to a team employee who was in contact with Diana Munson, the locker itself is believed to have been blessed by Pope John Paul II on the occasion of his historic visit to Yankee Stadium in October of 1979. This jersey was one of the final Yankees home uniforms worn by Munson in game play. It has been photo matched and dated to the 1979 season (see detail photo). The jersey retains its original interlocked "NY" on the front in a navy blue tackle twill with original #15 on the back. Strip tag is affixed inside the collar with "Munson 79 2" chain stitched name/year/set tagging remaining fully intact. Wilson manufacturing tag remains affixed to the tail front. The jersey remains in 100% original unaltered condition exhibiting light to moderate use/wash wear. Matching pants also retains their original strip tag inside the waistband with "Munson 79 2 22" chain stitched name/year/set/size tagging. Pants appear to show slightly lighter use than the jersey suggesting they may not have been worn quite as much as the shirt. The uniform was given directly to Diana Munson after Thurman's passing by the New York Yankees, and has remained in her possession until its current offering. Thurman Munson home uniforms are very rare with only a handful of authentic examples surviving to date. Important uniform offering from an iconic New York Yankees player with unimprovable provenance and poignant history. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions and letter of provenance from Diana Munson: EX-MT ($75,000.00-$125,000.00) $75,000.00

See a Picture of this Item 183 Significant 1970 Thurman Munson American League Rookie of the Year plaque. Few players in history have possessed such a natural understanding for the game, so early in their careers, as Thurman Munson. From his days as a three sport letterman in high school, to his illustrious, albeit relatively short Major League career, Munson always had that edge. His fiery competitive spirit drew the attention of fans and the admiration of his peers. After a brief, but impressive 26-game showing toward the end of the 1969 season, Thurman Munson became the Yankees starting catcher and clubhouse leader for the next 10 seasons. Munson's first full American League campaign in 1970 was evidence enough that he was ready for the task. Playing in 132 games, Munson posted a .302 batting average with 26 doubles, 137 hits, and 53 RBI's. Thurman's defensive skills were equally, if not more impressive than his prowess at the plate. In a rare, nearly unanimous vote, Munson was bestowed with the prestigious Ford Frick Award as the American League Rookie of the Year. The black painted wooden plaque measures 11" tall with an applied Ford Frick Award emblem at the top. The bottom portion of the plaque features a metal placard inscribed, "1970 Thurman L. Munson New York Yankees". The award plaque remains in its original condition with some surface crazing to the black paint at a small area on the right border and some natural patination to the emblem and placard plating. Retains its original Dieges & Clust mfg. label on the reverse. One of the most significant Major League player Rookie of the Year awards to have been offered at public auction. Includes letter of provenance from Diana Munson: EX ($30,000.00-$40,000.00) $40,000.00
