See a Picture of this Item 304 Scarce 1946 Honus Wagner Pittsburgh Pirates home jersey. Unlike any player of the early 1900s, Johannes Peter "Honus" Wagner transformed the game of baseball at the professional level. Although Ty Cobb is regarded by many historians to have been the finest player of the period, Cobb himself stated, "....Wagner was maybe the greatest star ever to take the diamond." Wagner's batting prowess is well documented having led the National League in batting a record (8) times with a career average of .327 and a total of 3,415 hits. Additionally, Wagner ranks as one of the finest all around shortstops in Major League history. His excellent fielding and base stealing abilities were nothing short of astounding especially given his husky stature and pronounced 'bow-legged' gate. After the completion of his illustrious playing career, Wagner remained as a hitting instructor for the Pirates from 1933-52. During this period he was credited with aiding the development of such star players as Ralph Kiner, Pie Traynor, Arky Vaughan, and KiKi Cuyler. Presented is Honus Wagner's 1946 Pittsburgh Pirates home jersey. Beautiful light cream color shirt retains its original "Pirates" team name across the front with original #33 on the reverse. Goldsmith tagging remains affixed within the collar together with size "48" flag tag along with "Wagner" chain stitched onto a strip tag underneath. The shirt exhibits evident, appropriate use incl. light age toning and a minute hole on one side mentioned for accuracy only. The jersey was recently uncovered from a Pittsburgh area collection and is being offered for the first time at public auction. Given the extraordinary rarity of playing career era Wagner jerseys (approx. 2-3 known) the offered example represents a remarkably unique opportunity to acquire a game worn Honus Wagner jersey. Includes March 31, 1947 issue of Life magazine picturing Wagner wearing either the offered jersey or an identical example. See a Picture of this Item 381 Scarce Bill McKechnie St. Louis Cardinals home jersey c.1928-29. Upon retiring as a Major League player in 1920, Bill McKechnie began a managerial career that would last from 1922-1946. His career total of 1,892 victories ranks him 13th on the All-Time Win list. McKechnie was known for his impeccable ability to garner the best from his players, while remaining calm and controlled in his leadership. Nicknamed "Deacon", McKechnie lived an uncommonly clean life for the times. Very religious, he did not smoke, drink, or gamble like many of his contemporaries from that era. Bill McKechnie also remains the only manager to capture three National League pennants with different teams (Pirates, Cardinals, and Reds). Offered is an incredibly rare St. Louis Cardinals home jersey worn by manager Bill McKechnie c.1928-29. The shirt retains its original J.M. Sainz Athletic Goods, St. Louis tagging inside the collar. Front of the jersey exhibits the classic embroidered Cardinals red birds logo with team name embroidered beneath. "St. L" Old English felt lettering remains affixed to the left sleeve. Jersey remains in its original condition with only a tiny hole at the bottom of the back of the tail. The shirt also displays some general light soiling with a few more pronounced areas from usage and age wear. Although the majority of the soiling could be easily removed through professional cleaning, we have left the jersey in its original state should bidders prefer its current condition. According to first person accounts by McKechnie's grandson Jim, Bill wore the jersey on several occasions after his career, and recounted having worn it as a member of the Cardinals in the late 1920s. Pre-1930s era Major League jerseys of any type are exceedingly rare with Hall of Fame member examples of special note. To the best of our knowledge, the offered jersey is the first McKechnie game worn uniform of any type to have entered the marketplace. Includes a matted and framed display containing a period 8"x10" photo of McKechnie wearing a similar jersey and a blue ink cut signature of McKechnie. Includes LOA from James Spence Authentication (autograph), Hunt Auctions, Inc. (jersey), and a letter of provenance from James McKechnie: EX ($15,000.00-$25,000.00) $15,000.00

See a Picture of this Item 390 Significant 1925 "Harmony and Hustle" handwritten letter sent to Bill McKechnie by Pitt. Pirates owner Barney Dreyfuss. Handwritten four page letter dated March 1, 1925 was written by Pirates owner Barney Dreyfuss to manager Bill McKechnie during Spring Training. The letter is extremely poignant in conveying Dreyfuss' passion for winning and his interest in fostering an environment of "Harmony and Hustle" among team members. He writes, in part, "'Harmony and Hustle' should and must be the watchword this year, I believe you to have the Material if only Harmony will prevail, and if Hustle by every member of the club is being practiced. I do hope and trust you will be able to instill that spirit H&H in the mind of everyman, not everyman for himself, but every man for his team at all times will bring us the success we are aiming at..." Dreyfuss goes on to discuss players who in the past have not been committed to their team and have failed. He is also very complimentary of McKechnie as manager, stating that he has full confidence in his abilities and would do whatever it takes to win. The letter closes with a beautiful calligraphic style Dreyfuss signature along with a P.S., "Don't let the boys forget that Harmony & Hustle in 1925 will bring success to them all as well as to me." The Pirates would go on to capture the 1925 World Championship under the leadership of McKechnie.
