Spalding tag remains inside the collar along with "L.Waner" chain stitching. Jersey remains in outstanding original condition exhibiting appropriate use with light age toning. The red piping around the back of the neck has some light fraying and there is a very small surface hole under the "A" in Pirates. Fowler went on to play in various leagues for several teams through the 1890s including the Western and International Leagues. See a Picture of this Item 859 Significant 1887 Detroit Wolverines World Championship Dauvray Cup pendant as issued to James "Deacon" White. Since its inception in 1884, the World Championship series between the victors of the National League and American Association had become extraordinarily popular. The 1887 match would feature the NL Champion Detroit Wolverines and the Amer. Association Champion St. Louis Browns. The series would be decided after the eleventh game (of 15) when the Wolverines captured their eighth victory and thusly were crowned Champions of the World. In addition to the laud and admiration of Detroit and baseball fans in general, the team received the Dauvray Cup award as the winners of the series. Actress Helen Dauvray, who was the wife of New York Giants player John Montgomery Ward, had donated a $500.00 silver baseball trophy cup that would be awarded to the series champion each year. If a given team won three titles, the cup would then become the personal property of that team. After 1891, the series was disbanded and the cup was misplaced. To date, the trophy has not been located. In addition to the "Dauvray Cup" trophy, each member of the winning team received a Dauvray Cup medal. Offered is one of four surviving Dauvray Cup medals issued to the Detroit Wolverines which had been presented to James "Deacon" White. Two of the other three known pins, from Dan Brouthers and Sam Thompson, reside in the Baseball Hall of Fame with the third, from Charles "Lady" Baldwin, in a private collection. See a Picture of this Item 876 Rare James "Deacon" White 19th century baseball uniform pants. Pair of period cream color pants worn by Deacon White during his illustrious 19th century professional baseball career. The pants retain their original metal buttons and have a single pocket on the back area. "White" is written in period ink at two different areas inside of the interior waistband. Overall condition is very fine with a some moth holes primarily on the back side of the pant legs (typically seen on wool uniform parts of this era) and some general light wear. Based on a process of elimination through photographic comparison, it is highly likely that these were worn by White as a member of the Boston Red Stockings during the 1870s era. The pants appear to be nearly identical to several examples that have been documented through photographs within the White collection. 19th century professional baseball uniform pieces are among the rarest of all vintage memorabilia categories with only a handful of authentic exemplars having entered the hobby. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions and letter of provenance from the White family: VG-EX ($2,000.00-$3,000.00) $6,750.00

See a Picture of this Item 877 Important James "Deacon" White professional baseball spider style catcher's mask c.1880s. During his early playing days with the Cleveland Forest City team, Deacon White was credited with making many innovations to the catcher's position; among these, he was the first professional catcher to wear a glove and to stand up behind the plate. Although White's notable accomplishments are many, he may be best remembered for being the first professional baseball player to wear a catcher's mask during game play. The following excerpts from a 1920s newspaper interview with Deacon White perhaps best tell the story: One day during the season of 1875 at Boston, the papers announced that "The man with the iron mask would play a game of baseball for Harvard". Harry Wright asked me to go out with him and see the demonstration. A fellow named Fred Thayer, third baseman for Harvard, had made a big cage, much like a bird's cage, out of heavy iron wire. This the Harvard catcher, Jim Tyng, wore during the game. 'What do you think of it?' Harry asked me. Well I told him such a mask hindered a catcher's work but I believe one could be made which would prove satisfactory. "Make one the way you think it should be made" he ordered. So I went to an iron worker in Boston and had him make me a mask out of steel wire. It fit over my face only, with padding around it, and was held on with elastic bands. This I used in catching Spalding for two seasons after that, and it came in handy when I went up behind the plate to catch my brother in 1878. The offered mask exhibits evidence of heavy use including wear to the leather padding, which has been reinforced with period wire while retaining its original mohair interior fill. The mask has no head strapping present of any type and retains its original form with no breaks to the metalwork. While it is impossible to document how many masks White wore during his (15) year career, it is worth noting he did play other infield positions for the majority of the second half of his career. His partial time as a catcher coupled with the fact that masks of this type would not have been purchased in any sort of large quantities during the era points to the extreme rarity of the offered example. Very desirable and historic piece of antique baseball equipment with unimprovable provenance. Includes letter of provenance from the White family and the original news article interview with Deacon White regarding the mask: VG ($7,500.00-$10,000.00) $15,500.00

See a Picture of this Item 883 Important 1871 Cleveland Forest City Base Ball Club team photograph. On St. Patrick's Day in 1871, the National Association was formed by ten representatives in a bar in New York. The result was the first true professional baseball league, the National Association. The two top draws in the league were slated to play the inaugural game in Washington, but were rained out. As a result, on May 4, 1871 the Cleveland Forest City club played the Fort Wayne Kekiongas in the first "Major League Baseball" game at Fort Wayne. Fort Wayne won the coin toss and elected to have Forest City bat first. The first hit was a double collected by catcher James "Deacon" White in the first inning. The period accounts of the game detail an exceptionally well played match with Fort Wayne winning by a score of 2-0. Offered is an incredible early albumen photograph in uncommon large format size measuring 13"x16" matted and framed picturing the Forest City Club of Cleveland who took part in that inaugural professional baseball game. The team is wearing very fine uniforms of the period including bib front jerseys with interlocking "FC" script lettering. Players and the team are identified in the bottom margin including J.White, Sutton, Carleton, E.White, Allison, and Kimball. Two early baseball bats are visible along with an early baseball. Original images of this quality from this formative period in baseball history are virtually non existent. The offered exemplar is the first that we have encountered. Includes letter of provenance from the White family: EX-MT ($10,000.00-$15,000.00) $5,250.00

See a Picture of this Item 884 Significant 1871 Troy Haymakers large format photographic display. Exceedingly rare photographic composite display piece depicting the Troy Unions, nicknamed the "Haymakers". The players are pictured in individual vignette portraits wearing their bib front uniforms. Players are identified in period red ink including Charles Flowers, Michael McGeary, John McMullin, William Flynn, Stephen King, Lipman Pike, Edward Conners, Thomas York, William Craver, and Esteban "Stephen" Bellan. The Unions (Haymakers) were one of the founding teams of the National Association and played in the inaugural 1871 season. Of significance is the fact that Stephen Bellan was the first Cuban/Latin American player ever to play professional baseball in the United States. Bellan attended Fordham University along with his brother Domingo in the late 1850s and played for a local amateur baseball team before moving on to play for Morrisania and Troy. The portraits themselves each measure 2 1/2" tall and are affixed to a large 14"x22" mount. All titling, dating, player names, and decor are hand drawn in red and black ink. The mount itself has some typical surface soiling and some restoration at the top left corner to a 3 1/2" chip. A small edge tear at the top of the mount has also been secured with professional conservation. Although Deacon White was obviously not a member of the Troy team, he was playing for the Cleveland team during the very same 1871 National Association season. Additionally, it is evident that White had a high regard for the historic nature of this early period in baseball history, and was clearly preserving objects such as the offered photographic display. Incredible 19th century display piece which is likely a unique exemplar. Matted and framed. Includes letter of provenance from the White family: EX (With note to restoration) ($7,500.00-$10,000.00) $6,500.00

Early mounted image pictures the Niagara team wearing full uniforms with an uncommon checked plaid pattern. The image itself measures 9 1/2"x13" on its original 14"x17" mount matted and framed. Interestingly, the player at the far left of the front row has had his facial image "tipped" onto the full photo in the period. The Niagara club was one of the earliest organized baseball teams in the country with evidence detailing game play as early as the 1850s. The photograph itself remains fairly clean with light surface wear. The mount has some typical light soiling (not visible under the matting). While there are a few later prints of this image in existence, it is very possible that the offered copy is a unique surviving original in this format. Includes letter of provenance from the White family: EX ($2,500.00-$3,500.00) $2,000.00
