See a Picture of this Item 179 Significant cache of materials with relation to 1941 "Joltin Joe DiMaggio" song. During the summer of 1941, baseball provided a much needed diversion from the events unfolding in Europe. As a result, Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hit streak captivated the nation in a manner not seen since the days of Babe Ruth. The lyrics for "Joltin Joe DiMaggio" were originally written on a napkin in a New York hotel on the evening of July 2, 1941 by Allan Courtney. Shortly thereafter, Courtney, the New York radio announcer, got together with an orchestra leader by the name of Les Brown, and together, they produced one of the most recognizable and beloved tunes in American history, "Joltin Joe DiMaggio". Included within Joe DiMaggio's personal files regarding the song are the following: Sept. 8, 1941 original contract between Allan Courtney Music Co. and Joe DiMaggio regarding royalties for Joe. Along with a few precious other timeless melodies, the famed song dedicated to Joe's magical 1941 season remains fixed in our memories, even for those who never watched DiMaggio play baseball. Bat exhibits excellent use characteristics incl. ball marks, rack marks, and grain swelling. Rookie era facsimile style signature is stamped on the barrel end along with a very scarce "GENUINE SLUGGER" branding stamp. The bat itself was given to a young boy who had met New York Yankees player Snuffy Stirnweiss while delivering fish. Stirnweiss asked the boy who his favorite player was to which the boy replied, Joe DiMaggio. About two weeks later Stirnweiss presented the boy with the offered DiMaggio game bat to which he was told that Joe had hit a home run with the bat in the previous day's game. In addition to dating via labeling and markings the bat is identical to several exemplars found in a period photograph of Joe DiMaggio swinging a bat with the same branding stampings. The bat stampings are also clearly illustrated in a period Louisville Slugger advertisement. See a Picture of this Item 200 Rare professional model baseball glove attributed to Joe DiMaggio c.1943. During WWII, DiMaggio was stationed in Santa Ana, CA as a Physical Education instructor. Captain Robert S. Decker coached the Santa Ana army air corps baseball team, for which Joe DiMaggio played during his time in the service. Towards the end of the war, just before leaving the base, DiMaggio presented Capt. Decker with the glove he had used while playing in the army. This Wilson RHT model glove retains the majority of its original stampings (although some are faint) and its original Wilson metal button on the backstrap. The glove exhibits heavy usage including interior surface wear, surface flaking to the interior of the back padding, and is missing its top piece of webbing. The backstrap has a period ink notation listing Robert Decker and his address. Based on the heavy usage, and the fact that DiMaggio was first stationed at Santa Ana during his 31 month military service, it is very probable DiMaggio not only used the glove in the service, but also with the New York Yankees prior to entering the military. Included with the glove is a cache of correspondence from Robert Decker's daughter, Duane, to Joe DiMaggio in 1982. Ms. Decker initially contacted Joe to ask if he would sign the glove. Several letters were sent by Marie DiMaggio (Joe's sister), who commented in one that Joe "knew your Dad real well". Eventually, it was decided that Joe would sign the glove, which is autographed on the interior, "To Duane Best Wishes Joe DiMaggio" in blue sharpie. Signature remains quite strong rating 8 out of 10. Documented game used baseball gloves from Hall of Fame players are exceedingly rare with the offered example ranking among the finest of its type to enter the marketplace. Includes letter of provenance from Duane Decker, LOA from James Spence Authentication (signature), and various copies of the supporting paperwork including a photo of DiMaggio with Decker (in uniform) at Santa Ana and copies of the correspondence from Marie DiMaggio and Duane Decker: EX ($15,000.00-$20,000.00) DNS
