Significant July 24, 1911 Addie Joss Day All-Star benefit team photograph by Louis Van Oeyen. Regarded as the finest baseball related photograph with respect to content, clarity, subject, photographer, and composition. The offered example is one of only two known surviving original copies taken by noted photographer Louis Van Oeyen at Cleveland during a game played by an assemblage of All-Star players to benefit the widow of pitcher Addie Joss who had recently passed away from tubercular meningitis. The image measures 10 1/2"x13 1/2" matted and framed picturing (14) players incl. Cobb, Johnson, Baker, Collins, Speaker, and Wood. The clarity and registration remain in perfect original condition with the photo having two small tear repairs on the back of the far left edge and two 1" square areas of restoration at the far right edge from album removal (both are in non descript areas). The photo also had some very faint player names written on the front which were professionally removed with very slight vestiges visible upon close inspection. Marked with Van Oeyen's trademark raised stamp at bottom left corner. The team is accepted by many historians to be the greatest All-Star assemblage to have ever taken the field with a total of seven Hall of Famers and several others who deserve to be in the Hall. This is coupled with the fact that the team was assembled to play against the Cleveland Naps with players such as Cy Young and Joe Jackson. Based upon the extreme rarity of this image it can be assumed that these were created to be given to the players on the team as the surviving examples originated from participants incl. Joe Wood. Walter Johnson's copy has been documented to exist but its location is unknown. Truly, a masterful piece of photographic art relating to one of the most storied events in baseball history: EX-MT (With note to restoration) |

Fine Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig auto. baseball with direct provenance c.1928. Lightly toned Brine's "Official League Ball" with green and red stitching was signed on August 9, 1928 during an exhibition game played in Everett, MA to benefit the families of a local oil factory disaster. A young boy named Leonard McDonald served as the bat boy for the game and obtained the offered baseball on that date. The ball has been signed by Babe Ruth on the sweet spot and Lou Gehrig on a side panel. The Ruth signature remains notably bold rating a strong 9-9.5 out of 10 with the Gehrig signature remaining in as signed condition on a side panel rating 9.5-10 out of 10 (uncommonly bold for a Gehrig signature on a baseball). Former Red Sox manager Bill Carrigan, who was also in attendance, signed the top panel rating a 3 out of 10 due to fading. The ball is accompanied by a photograph of Leonard McDonald standing on the field with Ruth and Gehrig during the benefit game (pictured). The ball itself remains fairly clean with light surface wear to the two adjacent panels that do not affect the Ruth and Gehrig signatures. Superb example with impeccable provenance and virtually unimproveable signature exemplars. Includes LOA from James Spence Authentication: Ball: EX, Signatures: Range NM-NM.MT |
