See a Picture of this Item 118 Significant 1903 "History of Colored Base Ball" by Sol White. Without question, the rarest and most valuable of all baseball related books with less then a dozen documented copies extant. White was a player, manager, and owner. Educated at Wilberforce University he was literate and a professional historian. His stated goal with this book was "to follow the mutations of colored base ball, as accurately as possible". The volume was the first published book devoted to African American baseball and remained as such for over 40 years. It is highly regarded not only for its scarcity and related value but equally for its invaluable content regarding the earliest history of African American baseball. The offered example remains in very good condition with small chips to the front corners and one minor back corner chip. Back cover has a minor 3" crease and the spine remains fully intact with pages tightly bound. Interior pages are quite clean remaining near white with some very minor chips to the right bottom corners of the first six pages. The history of early African American baseball in this country remains to date an ongoing discovery process. Mr. White's pioneering volume on the subject ranks among the more substantive and important baseball related books in existence. See a Picture of this Item 157 Scarce Roberto Clemente 1958 Pittsburgh Pirates road jersey. MacGregor tag remains inside the collar and "Set 1 1958" flag tag is affixed inside of the shirt tail. Jersey exhibits evident usage including a few light stains and appropriate light wear to the piping in some areas. By 1958 Clemente was recognized as a rising star in the National League on both offense and defense. He would go on to finish his (18) year career with all round totals equaled by few players in Major League history including .317 lifetime batting average, 3000 hits (exactly), 12 straight Gold Glove awards, 11 All-Star appearances, 440 doubles, 1305 RBI's, and a fielding average of .973. As lofty as Clemente's baseball statistics were he was probably best known for his off the field humanitarian endeavors. On New Years Eve of 1972, Clemente died in a tragic plane crash while on his way to deliver relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. The offered jersey is among the earliest playing career extant and to our knowledge the earliest to be sold at auction. During his illustrious (18) year Major League career Roberto Clemente captured the National League batting title four times. Offered is the 1965 National League Silver Bat award which was presented to Clemente as the 1965 NL batting champion. The award is made in the manner of a professional model Louisville Slugger 125 model Clemente bat measuring 34" long and weighing 55.6 ounces in sterling silver. Overall condition is very fine given its materials with some light surface scratching and a minor indentation at the end of the barrel. "Batting Champion 1965 National League B.A. .329" is inscribed near the barrel area denoting the award title. Often lost in Clemente's overall game play is the fact that he was one of the finest batters of the era posting a lifetime .317 average with 3,000 hits and over 1,300 RBI's. Amazingly, Clemente won yet another batting title in 1967 with a career best .357 average. The offered award was given to former Pittsburgh Pirates General Manager Joe L. Brown in 1980 during a 20th Anniversary reunion of the 1960 World Championship team. With the exception of the Most Valuable Player Award, the Silver Bat is regarded as the most coveted of all personal player awards with only a handful having been made available to the collecting public. Substantive piece from one of the greatest players in Major League history. Includes vintage handwritten letter of provenance from Joe L. Brown and LOA: NM (Estimate Upon Request) $90,000.00

The image measures 6" square and has been signed at the top left by Cobb in black ink rating 9 out of 10. Interestingly, the reverse has handwritten ink notations by Cobb that describe the play in which he violently slid into third baseman Jimmy Austin. He writes, "Jimmy Austin 3rd base, 1st & 3rd are a sacrifice, NY Highlanders Park, was a high throw from 1st base, Austin was coming down, my feet on ground". Cobb autographed exemplars of this particular image are notably rare and very highly desired with note to the handwritten notations by Cobb on the reverse. Includes LOA from James Spence Authentication: Photo: EX, Signature: NM ($4,000.00-$5,000.00) $2,500.00
