See a Picture of this Item 695 Significant April 20, 1912 Fenway Park Opening Day panoramic photograph. As noted by author John Updike, "Fenway Park is a lyric little bandbox of a ballpark. Everything is painted green and seems in curiously sharp focus, like the inside of an old-fashioned peeping-type Easter egg." On April 20, 1912 the new Fenway Park opened its gates to the public and into history. Seated between the Muddy River and Stony Brook the stadium was built by railroad owner John Taylor who built the park as a real estate venture on an area known as the "Fens". Ground was broken in September 1911 and although not totally completed the game was played on April 20, 1912 before a crowd of 27,000 fans. Appropriately, the inaugural opponent was the New York Highlanders (who later became the Yankees) and was decided as a Red Sox victory in the 10th inning on a Tris Speaker hit. Image measures an impressive 7"x45" framed with both teams lined up in front of the grandstand. Players include Speaker, Wood, Hooper, Cicotte, Chase, Ford, and Warhop. Speaker and Wood are pictured twice as they ran around to the Highlanders side after the first exposure was taken. Marked Glines photo, Washington at top right corner. Image has a few small areas of inpainting at far right edge and some relatively minor restoration to a crack/creasing at far left end typically seen from 'scrolling'. Photo retains excellent clarity and contrast with the red, white, and blue bunting visible behind the players. The offered example is the first that we have seen offered at auction and represents both the beginning of the legendary stadium and its most storied rivalry between the Yankees and Red Sox: EX ($10,000.00-$15,000.00) $11,500.00

Signatures range from 3-7 out of 10 with majority rating 6 or 7. Image itself is marked Rideout studios, Washington at top right and retains excellent contrast and clarity given the large size. Photo has some typical light wear to far left edge from 'scrolling' , an area of abrasion at left edge, and an area of moisture staining at center where a small area has adhered to the glass. Substantive signed image of the AL Champion Senators in desirable large format sizing: EX ($4,500.00-$6,500.00) $6,000.00
